Lanthanum chloride

Is this the right stuff

Is this the right stuff

Gary,

Here are a couple of pictures I took trying to verify this is the correct stuff.

Can you outline how you dose this and how often one more time. My system is approx 550-600 gallons, and the returns do flow into two filter socks.

Thanks in advance

That is the correct stuff. I have a bottle of it also. I'm not sure if it's the flash on the picture but my liquid is clear and that looks brown.

It appears to be kind of amber in color looking through the bottle. I am not sure of the age of the product. The bottle is a little dusty. I just bought it today though from a local pool company.

I use 5 millilitres of lanthanum chloride dissolved into 1 litre of water for treatment on my 300 gallon system.
Lanthanum chloride should be used in conjunction with a 10 micron filter and a skimmer- you don't simply pour it into an aquarium.

in a 600 gallon system I would simply double the dosage. Realistically, as long as you slow dose it you could get away with diluting 10ml. LaCl2 into 1 litre of water. Make sure to use a 10 micron filter (along with your skimmer) because it makes all the difference in the world IME.

Ibassfish That is what I use. I dilute it at about 70% ro water.

Gary

I know you said you dose this when you do a water change, how often do you change your water?

Do you run the 10 micron filter socks everyday or just when dosing the chemical?

What micron socks do you use on a daily basis if not the 10 micron sock everyday?

I change water weekly. I now run 10 micron filter 24/7. It's high maintenance because 10 micron clogs quick. I believe the 10 micron sock continues to catch PO4 flocculent long after each water change.

Mine appears to be an amber shade . I opened the top and looking down into the bottle it still looks amber.

Gary you drip or add your chemical into your filter sock? Or is it added to your sump. I am guessing the filter sock.

I am not going to try this until after the 20th of February as we are having a local reef club meeting at my house. Just in case things go badly...

initially I dripped the diluted LaCl2 down my 10ft. of drains into the filter sock. Nowadays I simply drip it into the sock slowly. I stop the drip just before the sock clogs completely. (I want 100% of draining water to pass through the 10 micron sock.)
Remove sock and repeat if necessary.

Key animals to watch IME:

*Tangs (especially Acanthurus)
*Snails
*Tridacna clams

Gary,

What issues have you experienced with Acanthurus Tangs?

Thanks in advance,
Bob

from page one of this thread
If you dose too fast or too much the water will get cloudy and sensitive Tangs will start breathing heavy. (Dose it really heavy and I've heard it can cloud up the surfaces of an aquarium.)

results after one month (two treatments per week equaling eight treatments) SPS coloration, growth and polyp extension much improved. Algae eating Blenny getting skinny due to lack of food.
