Learning/rebuilding from my epic fail

Here's a few new shots from tonight.. Not my best.. But I'm addicted to taking photos..
The infamous black polyped purple rain.. Grown a bit..

A red Diablo that hasn't grown in months but has encrusted..

Sermentosa I added a couple weeks ago..

Hawkins which was completely white when I got it.. Slowly getting some color. Hopefully after green comes blue!

This no name is kinda cool..

That's all I got for now..
I think I have to let things grow out a bit.. Although, I'll probably have more new frags by the end of the week.. Next week for sure...
I can't stop... :)

Those pics are spectacular! The color is amazing and as you said, the growth will come. The hard part now as we discussed elsewhere is to resist tweaking...harder said than done for sure!

Jeez, that Sarmentosa looks a whole lot better than it did when we had it. I added a frag to my tank, we'll see if I get the same sort of colouration!

I see you using all the names for the Acroporas. Are you confident that one Purple Rain is the same species as the next Purple Rain, for instance? Or Hawkins or what have you. I get the feeling that a lot of people, not you but vendors more specifically, tend to BS the uninitiated hobbyist with the francy names, especially with those who may not be as familiar with them as some. Do you get that same impression?

Nice Matt, going to have to change the title to the thread pretty soon, no FAIL going on in that tank, beautiful corals, way to go man!

Some great colours there, hope everything is panning out ok now.
Thanks reef bloke! Just have to keep things stable..

Thanks Matt.... Yep... to tweak or not to tweak... The eternal reef question... Does changing to 250w from 150w fall into the tweak category??? :)

Excellent colors and nice pics! Everything looks like it is coming along nicely
Thanks cfloor!

Hey Chris, the top down shots always bring out the best in acros.. I don't think it's changed so much from when I first got it...

That's a very good question you ask.. Sometimes, it's difficult to know what you are buying and sometimes corals look a lot like what they are supposed to and sometimes you just have to trust your source.
The corals above, the purple rain is not to my knowledge a 'named' coral. I got it from Raja and he called it that, so I'm pretty sure it's a purple rain! :)
The Diablo came from a large colony that had a classic Diablo look and raja said it was from RR.
Sermantosa is sermentosa..
The true classics like Hawkins is fairly easy to identify. I got this from fragbox and I have to trust him, March has been very upfront with me. I can only assume it's a Hawkins.. Time will tell, it is so classic in its colour and growth, I'll know if it isn't a Hawkins..
A more difficult coral to truly identify is my Oregon Tort..

Also from fragbox.. He said he went to the U.S. and got it from a reliable source but who really knows for sure.. There are many corals that look very similar to the true Oregon tort..
There is a very fascinating thread on RC about the origins of the OT.. Somebody must have a link... I'd bet Matt or Sahin could probably produce it pretty quick..

So, for a newbe who doesn't really know what hey are looking for, it could be tricky. For reefers who have seen many a coral in the flesh or many pics of what hey are looking for, less tricky.. But sometimes it's tough to really know for sure..

mmmm looking fantastic mate!! :inlove: some of those colours are unreal!

Thanks! Can't wait to get my 250ws to have a true Radium reef like you! :)

Appreciate it, perry! :)

Looking good, nice pieces

Wow, some strong colours in those SPS!

Thanks, guys!! :)

Corals are looking really good! Colors look great so hopefully soon you can see some real growth. That black polyped purple rain is starting to get some real nice contrasting color on the corallites, it's looking awesome too!

I notice you also tend to run your tank quite blue overall. Is that because you prefer the look, or you think that it will be better for the corals?

Thanks, Joe! Colors are pretty good. I'm going to get them better!
But good growth always brings out colors.....

I am definitely a fan of a blue cast to a tank. Just looks better to me. More colour pop..
And there is plenty of talk about how bluer lights tend to bring out better colors on the acros..

Here's my latest project...

I have to get my rabbit fish out of the tank.. And a few peppermint shrimp. They have finished off the aptasia and are getting hungry. I'll try to leave around 10. Currently, there are about 40..... Yikes..

Ok!!!!
Well, I couldn't resist.. Took a couple shots when the leds and t5s were on. Here's a few..:)
A right close up of the Hawkins..

My fastest grower.. Seen this one before but anyways.. Side:

Top down..

This one is developing more red in the older parts of the body.. It is low in the tank.. Curious what it would do higher up...

Few more... Not my best shots but I felt like posting anyways...
This one is very slow..

Focus is not quite perfect here but...

And this shot I just like..

Ok.. That's it..
I gotta say, I sure am loving the reef again..
Been a looooong time.... Feels good.. :)

Post as much as you want, no one is complaining here! I reeeeallly love the second one with the Purple body, smooth skin, and green corallite rims. And I'm thrilled to hear you say that you are enjoying your reef:bounce3:

What's this one? I have something similar, but mine has a bit different coloration. It was sold to me as a Double Doozy frag. I'm not doubting that it is, but I never see pics of frags just the original Mother Colony pic.
