Leonardo's Apogon Reef

I find it very strange that you do not think necessary out skimmer for cleaning or maintenance ...the sump height only allows you to take the cup?
What is source of this salt mist? I use a department covered with foam to prevent salt spray produced by the descent of the overflow...it maintain all my sump and table inside very clean.

What means VSV? (Vodka dosing?)
Thanks you

Why do you think I not take my skimmer out for maintenance? The sump is completely cleaned every two months. Also the skimmer body is taken out and cleaned. It doesn't get dirty very fast.
Source of the salt mist is falling water in the return section. My overflow doesn't draw air so it is bubble free.
I don't want to depend of foam to cover the sump. Since I always have cleaned the sump regularly this was a good solution against salt mist.

VSV is of course Vodka Sugar Vinegar.

Nice tank. is overflow design as the same as last tank?

do you use dosing pump to feed for CaRX?

Thanks
Mars

Yes, it is the same tank so the overflow is the same. I use a dosing pump to feed the RX.

Leonard, I had a similar experience with "dry" acros recently. My potassium levels were in the low 200s. I bumped it up to 410ppm and they bounced back to full health in a week. I have potassium on a doser now and the response from my corals has been amazing. That may be something to look into. I believe that it depletes quickly in a VSV tank.

It's funny you say that as I dose vodka and mine was low as well. So now hat I dose 5 drops every week my Sps look better and so do my blues.

No problem, GBD did a very good writeup about VSV.

Leonardo, what lighting combination were you using on your old tank? the color was very rich and well balanced.

Thanks! I've always used this combination, I did try some other combo's but I like this the best.

Thanks for the heads up, I have performed a K (potassium) test a few times, and it tested 380. A bit low but not enough to cause problems I think. But thanks for the warning, I will test it more often :)

I had not thought about the possibility to remove and clean all the sump (I think understand that, sorry my english is not very good)....curious and interesting option.
I looking forward to seeing new developments.
Thanks

Thanks Yano! I like to keep my reef (and sump) very clean :) I have 8000 Gallon of flow in my tank (pulse 30-100% 0.3 sec.) and 8000 G flow in the sump. Not much detritus settles but I want everything to be spotless ;)

Nice to see you up and running again Leo, looking forward to more updates!

WOW...8000 gallon in the sump!!! :eek2:
I understand your salt mist now!

nice to update. I was just reading up on the article that reef hobbyist wrote. nice to see you back in the hobby. I was out of it for a time when my system crashed but when I got back in, I went in hard.. still at it and loving every moment of it!

The ZeoVit guys believe that a pinwheel skimmer pulls more elements from the water (among other things). They maintain that if you run a pinwheel skimmer to be sure and monitor potassium levels carefully, and skim "dry."

I don't have any personal experience with this, and I don't think there is any science/research to back it, but there is empirical evidence from those who changed skimmers.

Maybe I didn't catch it in the thread, but one of the best things I've liked about your systems, is the Theme....in terms of aquascaping or fish stocking.... So is there any change in the theme, this time around?

Lookimg forward to your next update

Thanks for the reactions! :)

Thanks for the kind words, I hope you liked the article in Reef Hobbyist Magazine! :)

Apogon Reef V2 will be a fusion of the Formosa Forest and the original Apogon Reef. The focus will be on Staghorn Acropora again (my big love), completed with bushy Acropora.
After the corals grow out a bit and providing enough shelter, I will complete the reef with several Apogon species :)

Here is the main inspiration for this new project.
