Leonardo's Lagoon

I already liked the aluminium look of the Lumenarcs, so I did now powdercoated them. I did treated the inside and outside with a (clear) anti-corrosive coating. This also protect the insides of the Lumenarcs and T5 reflectors against saltwater splashed and corrosion stains.

I am not sure how this might effect the reflective qualities of the reflector, but I sure wish I thought of this for the outside. Next time!

I'm almost sure it doesn't :) It is a protective solution from Fauna Marin. It is called "UltraProtect Coating for Reflectors" I just treated the whole reflector, inside and outside ;)

paulthomas; Because of the width of my tank, the light doesn't spill over the edges of my tank. The additional T5 reflectors help to direct all the light in the right way :)

When I designed this pendant I chose for this look instead of a closed, finished pendant becuase the Lumenarcs can be very nice to look at when you incorporate them well in a pendant.
Thats why I chose for an open aluminium structure, showing the reflectors and pendants. All in an aluminium or powdercoated silver finish.

Feel free to copy my design! If you have more questions, you can always ask them.

Thanks Leonardo. It keeps growing on me. The more I look at your pendant, the more I like it. :D I really liked what you did with that Aquaspace Light on your Formosa tank too. Very clever...

Do you mean your T5 reflectors help contain the light from your halides?

Did you buy the aluminum with the polished edges or did you do that yourself?

What I'm not sure about is having my lighting open like that, 15' across the room from my plasma. Plasmas, as I'm sure you know, are great at reflecting glare.

Sorry for all the questions. :o

Thanks,
Paul

Thanks :) And the questions are not a problem at all ;)

The spread from the Lumenarcs isn't wide enough to spill over the 43,3" tank. The pendant is hanging 10" off the surface.
The T5 reflectors help contain the light that is reflecting of the watersurface. So I have no direct light in my room and also almost no reflected light..

If you want to make sure all the light will be contained you can always construct a pendant with the T5 angled inside, say with a 30º angle.

I made the aluminium construction myself, and had it powdercoated afterwards.

Leonardo,

I see your tank length is 63''. This is the same length as the elos 160 series. Is that a standard length glass or did you choose the length for another reason (as opposed to an even 60'')?

John, in the metric system 63" is 160 centimeter (Elos is Italian). 160 cm is also the lenght of most 80 Watt T5 pendants.
Because I wanted to use T5 I chose for this length.

outstanding tank - just been through the entire thread - i am very fond of the shallow lagoon type tank - an it is something i will strive for in the future.

A couple of requests however - did you ever get round to getting a video of the flow in the tank - quite interested to see the effect of the wave box in such a shallow reef.
And also - did you have much luck with the additional 70W spotlight MH's u were planning to clamp onto the light rack.
And last but not least - could we have some pictures of the heart and soul of this thing of beauty?

Once again great tank - remember to keep breaking out the camera!

Cheers

Mike

Hello Leonardo

Beautiful aquarium, I was wondering if you have a refugium with algae or do you carbon dose eg Prodibio or Zeovit?
If not how do you take care of Phosphates and Nitrates?

Thanks
Kevin

Thanks Mike. I busy making a video of the tank. Flow, equipment etc. will be shown. Pictures of the equipment can be found a few pages back in this tread :)

Greg, thank you! :)

Kevin, thanks. I use a small RDSB that also used in my Formosa Forest. During the transfer of the livestock I treated the RDSB the same as my livestock, preserving all the life in it.
I use some GFO in a DIY flowbed reactor.

But the mayority of the buildup of nitrates and phosphates are prevented by high flow and strong skimming.

I don't use any additives besides some trace elements (Iodine, Iron, Kaliumfluoride etc.)

Hey Leonardo,

As much as I wanted to copy your retro :D, my wife wanted something smaller because my tank is going in my living room. So I bought a Giesemann Spectra yesterday.

Do you have a fuge in your system?

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Leonardo,

I absolutly love your tank layout and design. I also like your lighting rack and have a question...How do you keep your light rack from favoring one side or the other (tidor-todder)?
Is everything perfectly balanced? It looks as though you just have those two small cables for such a large rack.

Thanks

Simon44; will make some new ones soon! :)

paul; Too bad ;) But The Giessemann will look better in a living room I think.... Good choice!

Lukin; Thank you :) I wanted to make to rack as clean as possible, that why I chose for two cables to hang the pendant. I just balanced it very carefully to position the holes for the cables.
Minor ajustments can be made by sliding the Lumenarcs front to back in their rack.

Eh, it is what it is. You have to humor them every now and then. If you know what I mean? ;) My wallet, however, didn't find it so funny. :o :D

Looks great.

Regarding cameras, I am a Canon guy. Nikon and Canon are sort of like arguing Ford or Chevy. Canon used to be the leader regarding digital but the tables are pretty level now. The one + I see for Canon is they have a little better lens selection (for 35mm SLR). Just my .02.
