I have ALWAYS been fixed on these guys and after 5 yrs in the hobby and an upgrade to a 90gal. (mixed reef, goby, and clown pair) I feel like I could make it work. Pets Inc. just got some in and they look great!! Any advice or insight would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Terry

If your tank is established and you purchase one in good condition/health which is eating prepared foods, you should be just fine.

How's your escape route looking a.k.a. top of you tank. I find if you have a 5/8" hole and a 5/8" wrasse, it will find a way through that very hole while you are on vacation.

oh and strainers over bulkheads and pipes are good too.....

Was thinking of making the "bird net" tops I have seen around. That or Eggcrate, but I think that will block too much! Was also thinking of a Melanurus. Any comparisons out there?

TDP,
I have several wrasse in my system now. Mostly coris (yellow, green) and fairy (red, blue velvet) and one melaranus. I added him last and he is doing terrific. I got him from RC and I am glad I did since his acclimation was tough. The green coris was not so nice to him for about two weeks. Got his tail nipped up pretty good.

As to Frick's comments though, they are notorious escape artists. All of them. I have lost two red tailed tamarins through the very same return pipe. (I never have understood that one but they both ended up in my sump stuck to my return pump intake).

I have never had a leopard but they are hiders so if you do go that route make sure you have a nice deep sandbed for them and no/few corals near the sandbed that will get buried.

Good luck!

+1 to all the comments. They do need a deep to very deep sand bed to hide. Also if you can, see if Pets inc allows you to see him eat prepared foods. That's a big plus as well as one that is healthy since they are notorious for losing health real fast when introduced to the hobby.

we got a pair of them from pets inc and do not regret it for a second. It took a while to get them bagged but once home they have been awesome. They are in our 300 gal with lots of hiding places and are out on the hunt each day. We added them about 8 months ago.

I have a trio of them. One male and two females. I got them from Pets Inc and have only seen one male available EVER. I have had them over two years.

Pets Inc keeps these fish longer than most...to make sure they have transported well and are eating. If you want one from them, I suggest you let them know because they will hold for you.

In my tank, they hunt all day long and eat what I feed. I have never seen any of them spook to the point of jumping, like my other wrasses have. It is their nature to hit the sand when frightened.

Beautiful fish and great addition to a reef when you get a good one.

Thanks for the input guys! I am 99% sure that I need to go Melanurus. My sandbed in not really deep and I think leopards would enjoy a bigger tank. They have a Melanurus at RC and he looks great!! AZTANG those are beautiful, but I think I will have to wait till I UPGRADE!!
