For those who aspire to keep leopard wrasses, especially choati leopard wrasses, what type of substrate do you have?

Hi All,

I was trying to keep up with the posting but it has gotten pretty long, hence I skipped a lot of pages! Please excuse my following question if it has been answered already.

I got a sixline a week ago and I was thinking of adding a bipartitus, but after reading the first few threads I dont want to take my chances as it sounds like the bipartitus may not last.

My question is: what wrasse would be safe with a sixline? I ahve a 100g tank, a year-and-a-half old, which I have started to add corals, SPSs.

is it a six line or a four line ?this question just came up on another tread and there was confusion on the exact fish . four line no good .........six line okay !

Well, I don't feel that a sixline is ok with my wrasses: fairy, flasher, leopard. Behavior as well as competition for natural food.

I've not seen my female meleagris for about 5 days now... I've had her for nearly 3 years. I've checked both overflows (she usually makes it into one of them when she disappears, despite efforts to keep her out), but no luck. Ticking me off... Last time I saw her, she looked healthy and was constantly hunting, so something must have gotten her, or she found a way through some plumbing. Still hopeful that she'll pop up.

Tomini Tang, pair of tomato clowns, Fusi goby, and a mystery wrasse. The mystery was added about 9 months ago (last fish in). It has put on size, but I never saw it picking on the meleagris. No other known big crabs, etc. (caught a big mitrax a couple of years ago, but no signs of anything since).

Of those, the mystery wrasse is most probably the aggressor although I cannot be sure.

Well, I decided to try a second Macropharyngodon chaoti wrasse. I know this would seem to be pressing my luck, but I just added a male to go along with my female. My female has been thriving for six months and I hope to have a mated pair. The male was active in the well packed bag, and ate PE mysis twice after acclimation. It never went into the sand. It is obviously WAY too early to tell, but I am optimistic; if it survives a month I will be much more optimistic. This pair is in a 220 gallon tank which is very mature with a 40 gallon refugium. I feed a minimum of 2-3 times daily. Oh yes, I forgot, it has sugar sand.

I will report back as time passes.

Steve ,your my hero ! that's great and i have high hope for you and your fish . are there any other fish in that tank ? the choati leopards have been on the list the last two weeks and the warehouse has been showing 20 to 30 of the small and the same in the medium size range but i have been patently waiting for the correct circumstances which are no present at this time . i really ,really hope the newbie does well and they match up and make a great pair for you .

Thanks ever so much. It is truly the luck of the draw if they come in healthy. So, if all goes well, perhaps I will get lucky. My female has been making overtures to the new male but the male just arrived and is simply exploring.

Oh, I forgot. Other fish in the tank: a pair of bellus angels, 4 pyramid butterflies, 4 other leopard wrasses including a pair of M. bipartus, a pair of C. earlei, a pair of pintail fairy wrasses, a candy basslet, and now a pair of Macropharyngodon chaoti. If all goes well, the only other fish I plan to add is a second female Macropharyngodon chaoti.

that tank must be awesome ! nice stocking list there i must admit .when i try them again it will be the choati's first for quite a while then i will add a few others when the time is right .again good luck hope you got a healthy one for sure .

Macropharyngodon choati - Day 5

Macropharyngodon choati - Day 5

All is still well with my new male. He has adjusted his biological clock to fit the lighting schedule (took two days) and he is eating well three times daily. The female has made overtures to him but he has not, as of yet, reciprocated. Still all seems well and I am optimistic. But I am still holding my breath and won't relax until he has made it for a couple of months.

great to hear Steve, that would be so cool if they would pair up and be tank mates wouldn't it ?i am slowly purchasing equipment for my new tank and trying to remove my 12 tank system so i can get a bunch and give them a good chance .time will tell but i have a long way to go before I'm ready for the choati's
