My Leopards

My Leopards

I have three leopards in my 110 right now. I have been very lucky, they all adapted pretty much instantly to pellets, though I feed them plenty of frozen as well.

I have had the melegaris the longest (about 2 years now), then recently I got the ornate. The ornate was actually the second, the first I bought had a swim bladder problem and died within 24 hrs.

Finally I found a shipment incoming from Tonga with some Macropharyngodon kuiteri. I believe 5/7 arrived DOA, not enough air in the bags. I did manage to find a very healthy one. She was out swimming day 1. Also eating NLS pellets day 1. She does not come out for very long still, only maybe 4 hours a day. I am hoping eventually that will increase.

Here are some pictures.

I got 2 Meleagris.
1st on for 2.5 years. I got it when it was a 1 inch juvi from City Pets in Houston. She was very healthy and active in their tiny display tank. I put her directly in one of my tanks, a 100 g cube anemone tank (30X30X30). There was a Powder blue tang and a breeding Onyx percula pair with Haddoni carpet anemone. Deep sand bed and some rock a nd a lot of pest aptasia. She did well there and grew from 1 inch toabout 2.5 inces over 2.5 years.

2nd Meleagris I just got yesterday PM. She is just shy of 3 inches. I got her from GCReef here in Corpus Christi, Seem very healthy and is out of the sand and eating pods and other small animals in the tank. She looks full with bulging stomach this PM when I got home from work.

I think she will do well also but it is really too early to tell for sure.

I don not attempt to to feed these wrasse, just them eat the organisms/pods in the tank

I am considering aquiring one that showed up @ my local LFS last week if it still looks healthy for a few more days. My question is just how aggressive are they? I have a pygmy flameback angel and a royal gramma in a RSM 130 with assorted corals. I am learning as much as I can before I make a move so any advice is much appreciated.

You will find that they literally ignore all other tank inhabitants. Very peaceful fish, they only time you get any aggression is when introducing another similar species (another leopard wrasse or different sex leopard)

That is what I was hoping. I have also heard the standard concerns with nutrition and asked an employee @ my LFS where the fish is located and he said they will take ARCTI PODS is all else fails. My concern is those are dead as a doornail and my old pipefish completely ignored them. Any experience with these? Thanks in advance

I have found that they all like Cyclop-eeze, the one that comes frozen in a red metallic style packaging. I really love this product and contains a very high protein percentage compared to other foods.

When all esle fails I try live brine shrimp (not very nutritious). Once I get them eating any of those two, I start mixing in small frozen brine and if they take that they will usually adapt well to most frozen foods.

Good luck

So no on the instant ocean room temp foil packs? My Pygmy angel in my BC 29 loves it but I swear it's cat food! Ever smell this stuff?? Hard to question the results but it truly smells of fancy feast.

Sad news, after having my choati wrasse, for 4 months, found it dead this morning, on the sand bed, inspected it. Nothing was wrong with it, didn't so any thing out of order with tank, parameters were stabble, ph good, temp stable. She went into the sand bed Saturday night fine, and healthy . Really really sad, had gotten it for 150$. Was doing great, then all of the sudden. Will purchase another one in a few weeks, and try it again.

did you deworm him ? i have had this happen to me several times and there is just no explaining it IMO . i have heard that there pretty sensative to alk /ph shifts but theres no real evidence .someone had 2 of them die the same weekend after he killed off a bunch of aptasia with aptasia-X and they were 3 years old so he assumes it may have been the alk shift that they could not handle .
best wishes in the future with then too ! this is the time when they are available in quantities,so get them while you can .

a quick update... I keep 3 jeweled leopard wrasse, Macropharyngodon lapillus from mauritius and a Macropharyngodon choati as well as a Macropharyngodon meleagris. They are all pretty calm but the most aggressive is the meleagris. he is constantly displaying to the Macropharyngodon lapillus after 6pm.

hey wrasse man How have you been? Anything cool in the store latley?
?

RJunkie42, i have been very good thanks for asking ,how have you been ? actually i am catching my fish at home so i can take down two tanks in my living room so i can paint and redecorate my "man cave" . along with this i will be installing a 93 cube ! i have everything but the tank and am excited to be installing led lighting that is to long wanted .i'm going to do a full reef tank and also planning on a pair of choati leopards or a pair of anampses feminsus which will be insane but also long over due .also going to go with a pair of MP-10s.also going to do a rock wall on the back and half way forward on the sides . just hunting for the mp-10s now and i still have to make the stand but that will only take a couple of days to complete. time is all i need as i have been very busy at the store .
the store has been doing quite well and i am in the middle of a couple of different sales as i am clearing the tanks of everything that has been here to long .im doing a couple of huge orders this week and am going to have a lot of cool critters coming in for sure . how has your tank been doing ? any new additions in your waterworld ?

So you're going with the 93g cube eh? Nice choice ;) it will look awesome with the rock wall and the mp 10's! Can't wait for my leopard wrasses to get here :)

That's gonna be something, lol! Good luck, buddy!

So I soppose I should post here my expirience so far with leopards. I bought one a few weeks ago and my mystery wrasse harassed it to death. It only lasted two days in the tank :( it was such a shame bc she was a nice big healthy fish. After that I decided to boot the mystery wrasse so I could try the leopard again. I ended up ordering two more leopards and my lfs ordered a third for me :) he got them in the store today so I picked them up still in the bag to reduce stress and acclimated them to my display tank. One went straight to the sand as to be expected. One is laying on its side on top of the sand and the third isn't looking well at all. Has some mouth damage and is upside down on the sand. It's looking like only one may survive :( I guess that's just how it goes with these wrasses. I will update again when I have more news on how they are doing. Wish me luck!

So I came home from work around 1 am est and remembered o I havnt checked live Aquaria and I went in on the right side they have collectors corner, and there it was a medium Kuiteri wrasse, for 169.99 $
Added an Aussie frog spawn to the order to make it over 225 for free shipping and clicked BUY :)
