Let's list all the things that can go wrong

Yikes! One might say we are crazy to continue with this hobby, but I say persistent. Where do I begin…

Big one for me is moving, that lead to accidental frags, which lead to stressed corals, then caused a RTN outbreak….that sucked!

How but random necrosis incidents that can’t even be pinpointed?

Pistol shrimp.

Skimmer pump burning out, electrical mayhem, white corals.

Calibration on Refractometer

How about taking the advice of you LFS this fish is safe for your SPS.

Okay, that never happened to me, but this did when I was still a novice in the hobbie.

I asked my LFS about these green anenome on the live rocks I want to buy, he said they are safe. I had to tear down my tank from mojano infestation.

Suprised nobody mentioned this one..

Forgetting the RODI is on when filling up ANYTHING = downstairs neighbor asking why they have water leaking down their kitchen walls.

and.. RODI + alcohol = bad mojo.

Thanks for the reminder. Off to the basement!:celeb1:

as SPS colonies get bigger, you start running out of room to the point your fish have very little room to swim and to the point you frag something each time you clean the glass.. Not fun..

Temperature probe been pulled out of the water by "someone" (probably the cat) while you're traveling  Result: 90 F for two weeks.

And in general, making things too complicated regarding to equipment and additives etc. I think it doesn't benefit the fail-safety of the system.

Leonardo

Did you evict the cat? :lolspin:

-Hubby mistaking a bottle of Magnesium supplement for RO/DI top-off water (1g Mag = mostly dead 40g SPS tank)

-Not waiting long enough to turn the A/C back on and take the protective wrap off the tank after the pest exterminator sprayed (just a general in-house spray...nothing too harsh) - resulted in a LOT of necrosis

-Cheap rubber suction cups on temperature probes - tank heated to 95 degrees before the problem was caught - almost all SPS were dead

Using mutiple thermometers to calibrate controller temp. Left the one that looked the most accurate in for a couple of months only to find out after loss of most of my choice colonies That the "sealed" magnet was not quite sealed hence corroded away to practically nothing.
As for panicking, at my altitude pwer out ages are so frequent they are practically a way of life If I still panicked I would have no hair left on my body.

I just want to go on record to say, I dont like this thread:eek1:
I dont think this was mentioned: Leaving the ATO unplugged after doing a water change:mad2:

Love the thread Mark and I can't think of anything new that was not yet mentioned.

I think the majority of things that go wrong are because of human error and a smaller amount are actually true mechanical issues...as many mechanical errors can be avoided if they were maintained properly ;)

At least you have it in the basement. I have always pulled the RO flood on a second story. Stupid gravity.

Here's one, don't set-up a 30yr old tank before you go to Cedar Point. There is nothing like getting a phone call that the bottom of your tank exploded while you get off the Top Trill Dragster.

.

.

Stuck ato solnoid flooding house with approx 300gal of water, tripping gfi breaker and all while your in the hospital, where the doctors almost killed you from severing your artery while doing a anterior fusion. Then coming home at midnight and having to help your wife remove water from the carpets for 4 hours... Beat that.

The sand on the magnet still makes me cringe, and putting in you grabber in the tank to move a Frag only to crunch your $100 piece in the process and realizing how stupid of a choice that was oh and relocating your choice piece because you realize it's too close to your green precilipora sp. And pulling up and then 9 fire and ice frags re planted through out woohooo.

unplugging something and forgetting to plug it back in... I love feed mode!!!!! hit feed , i can manually over ride, but if not it turns back on in 45 min

or kickin the plug off your chiller when you are waiting for your new temp probe

or temp probe period!!!!

SUNDAY+Closed fish store = desperate reefer with dead live stock!!!

Moral of the story it is always good to be repetitive and have back ups!!!!

OH fish!!!! i swear they always know my favorite piece, and low and behold they want what is on the bottom of the plug, but to get it they have to drop it in my chalice or acan garden!!!!!

STUPID PURPLE TANG!!!!! i shake my fist at you!!!!(She is lucky she was my first fish ever!!!!

How's about plain old sleep? I recently dozed off while giving a new frag a 6 hour Interceptor bath and didn't wake up until the next morning! Total bath time: 11 1/2 hours. Frag's still alive but carrying a major attitude. Still too early to predict a complete recovery.

At least its not a colony or whole tank. Frustrating but at least not devastating! ;)
