48" Retrofit: 6-54W T5 HO Fluorescents

48" Retrofit: 6-54W T5 HO Fluorescents

Manufacturer: Sunlight Supply Price: $489.00
Manufacturer: IceCap Price: $699.00

Guys ar the IceCap that mutch better?

Thanks, I figured that there was a reason that nobody was running more then 6 t5's on a 75 but I wasnt sure if it was do to space or the fact that most people are buying the pre-built rather then the retro kits.

The Ice Cap reflectors do a better job and the ballast will drive the lamps around 80 watts. The Ice Cap reflector is about a quarter inch wider than SLS, 2 1/8 vs. 2 3/8

is that the diffrence i nthe whole reflector and retro kit combined or is that just the reflector price? Because if you spent 200$+ for a retro kit then 600$+ for the ice cap reflecor, then your nuts, why not just go for MH then? lol (lol i for sum reason though do not like MH lights i would rather go for a really really good T5 set up instead)

well i am running the slr reflectors and think they are great, when you take just the reflector and hold it towards a light you can really see about 6 or 8 focused light beams reflected from it. i am also running the ice cap ballast, well its a URI but still made my ice cap just doesnt have the dimmer port, whole setup cost me about 500 for a 5 bulb retro.

Make sure you have a heatsink on that URI and have it installed in a cool location. Ice Cap says they get too hot running T5's.

I could have gone MH with what I paid, but I had some serious space limitations and I didn't want to deal what the heat issues of MH.

I think my T5s have been an excellent choice for my application.

Hooked up my new lights today. 4x39watts run on a 660. The canopy is drying from paint but here are some pics.

nice shots JVHam, those monti's are sweet

Well, it really depends on what your willing to spend your money on.... Like the others said the IceCaps will overdrive your 55watt lights to about 80 watts (or so), without shortening their lifespan. Just to put things in perspective: that extra 25 watts per bulb is going to add about 150 watts to your system (relatively speaking... "wattage" is really input, not output ;)). The extra wattage in addition to the better efficiency of the SLR's makes the IceCap much brighter. If you want the best, you gotta pay for it, IMO. But still, that is an awefully lot of money for some flouro's...

yes it is an awefully lot of money to spend but i too did not want mh due to the heat addition and the extra tall canopy, all in all i am very pleased with them.

Do you guys think that four 54w T5s being driven by a 660 ballast with the SLR would be consider an worth while upgrade from 6 40watt NO fluoresents?

Pedro

YES! sounds like a great improvement to me, just dont skimp on the setup and you will be very pleased, just take your time and look around on here at other peoples tank shot with t5 to se what bulb combo you wanna go with, thats how i figured out what bulbs i wanted to run

You will be amazed at the difference (make sure you get the SLRs). Night and day.

If this is for your 90g consider getting 6 bulbs with the extra 2 run off of another ballast; but 4 will be a good start.

If you get them, do some before and after pics.

I agree

Over a 90 I'd wait until I could afford the 6 bulb. 4 will be better than what you have, but 6 would be ideal. I have the 6 bulb over my 75 and I keep just about anything I want under them.
