Hey all ツ I'm looking to buy some Seahorses for my wife established Aqueon 15 Deluxe. I only want 1 pair, Not too big when adults, no zosterae, must eat frozen shrimp, good store, beautiful colors and affordable. Please help me.
Thanks in advance

Hi, a 15g is small for any of the regular seahorses. Typically seahorse keepers suggest a 30g for a pair of ponies. Make sure you choose captive bred for her too, not tank raised or net penned. Only captive bred are free of pathogens and accustom to aquarium conditions. You can get some good info on seahorse care at seahorse.org. H reidi are a little smaller than some of the other greater seahorses. They come in some nice colors too. Remember though, if you buy a colorful seahorse they can change color.

You should check out seahorse.org. Lots of information on the site and you can even enroll in a seahorse training program to get certified.

Yes I checked them out. I saw their certification and pricing. I was wondering is there a cheaper and reputable company.

Those two words don't fit well together. Cheaper and reputable.
A seahorse breeder like Dan U has the reputation because of the work he puts into raising the seahorses so you get that reputable stock.
You also get access to the best help available in pursuit of the seahorse keeping hobby.
Cheaper means buying tank raised or net pen raised where your chances of succeeding are much lower, but the price is lower also.
A low price doesn't seem as low after you have to replace the stock due to losses that are greater than with true captive bred.
Just to make what I believe is a correction on an earlier statement, IMO, true captive bred are not totally free of pathogens but because they are raised in properly filtered and treated water the odds are that there will be a lot fewer.
In any case, you will have to get a larger tank if you wish to have a decent chance of keeping standard seahorses, unless you buy one of the Ocean Rider H. fisheri, (two pair recommended) or their slightly cooler water H. capensis. (currently out of stock)

Thanks. This will be my first buy so I don't truly know how much I'll have to dish out. I'm just making sure I get the best seahorses and also making sure I don't get gypped in the process. I heard a lot of great things about seahorse.com. I also heard good things about you through the forums. When I mentioned cheaper, I meant lower in cost. Not some pet store "dead horse", but a reputable site.

There are a lot of people who swear by seahorse.com, but my personal preference is seahorsesource.com with Dan Underwood. They don't carry those small seahorses, but pricing on the species they do carry is often better.
I think it would be worth while doing a lot of research into the hobby and you may find it worthwhile to go with one of the standard species like erectus and invest in a larger tank.

I researched seahorsesource as well. Also southwatch. What's your thought about them? Would it be better to pm you?

As I don't check PM's, e-mails work much better (I'm old:spin2:), but generally speaking it's advisable to post queries so that others reading now or later can also benefit from your posts as well.
I can't advise on Southwatch as I haven't seen enough information one way or the other to comment on them at this time, but I'm sure others will chime in on them, especially if they are happy with them.

Ok cool. I was up last night and I believe I made my choice to go with seahorsesource. Thanks a lot for the help.

I have never used Seahorse Source, but have heard great things.. All my Hippocampus Erectus of Captive Bread by ORA. I have two LFS that get them from ORA and I wait to see them eating frozen, which they typically do with ease, I will then purchase them.

At this point, since I have had great luck with the ORA horses I intend on sticking with them from the two local sources that I frequent.

I ordered my 2 seahorses from Seahorse.com, (Ocean Rider) and they came very healthy and eating frozen mysis so I am satisfied. I will say that I am extremely impressed with Seahorse source as I ordered probiotic and enrichment from them. I had to leave a message and Dan called me back later that day. Upon finding out that I am a new seahorse owner he spent significant time sharing valuable information with me about caring for my new pets even though he knew I had purchased them else where. He told me if I had any other questions in the future he would be glad to help me. That is a man who loves seahorses and just wants the best for them. For that reason all my future seahorses will come from Seahorse source.

Great I'm definitely going to role with them.

Dan at Seahorse Source has been very helpful and I would highly recommend purchasing seahorses through him. Very knowledgeable and willing to help!
