Not sure if it has been mentioned but PetCo's are all ready phasing out Salt Water. The one where I live did away with it 2 months ago.

They were gone out of the last 2 PetCo's I was in also.

Wow, interesting. Is that a corporate directive to all stores? How credible was the source of this info?

That was per the Petco MGR. and some of my customers as well were told by Petco employee's (who sent them to my shop:D )

I'm pretty sure it's all stores but I'm sure the ones with the highest sales will be the last to go. I have bought 2 fish there (even though I own a store myself) just cause I felt sorry for the fish.

Actually no, it is part of their right sizing project and it has nothing to do with a managers decision. Its not all stores at least as of 5 months ago, a small percentage of stores will be discontinuing saltwater sales.

I am in construction, and did some work on the local Petco. I was there when they installed their fish section and was surprised that they had someone who knew what they were doing while setting up their systems. I talked with this person a lot while I was there, and they seemed to be very knowledgeable about what they were doing. I do not know what training the regular employees get, but not 3 weeks after opening, the ich was rampant, several dead tangs, over 50 clowns in one 10 gallon. The problem is that management doesn't care about anything but the bottom line. If you walk in there and tell them you want this fish or that fish, they're going to do whatever it takes to get the sale.

The Petco in our area hasn't had marine fish for several months now. I never bought anything alive from them when they did, though. I was in a petsmart the other night looking for chemi clean (didn't have it of course) and it appeared a whole bank of their tanks were not getting water flow. The surface of the water had an obvious film on it and the fish were all at the top gasping. I found (hard to find anyone in there) and employee and showed them and they looked at me like I was crazy. They completely blew me off and acted like I didn't know what I was talking about. . I never go in there again...

Referencing allauction's comment: would contacting someone like http://www.spca.com/ help or get involved? In my area we see animal cruelty charges placed against dog and horse owners, kennels. Would these same organizations turn a blind eye to the chain store's abuse?

The systems that petco uses for their stock tanks is top notch. MARS systems when properly maintained i.e. carbon, UV bulb and proper addition of evap water are as good as any system in any store. Petco receives its fish from the same places most LFS do so the quality is of fish here isnt the issue. Its the routine maintenance of these systems that gets overlooked. I will agree that most employed to the aquatic dept are uninformed or misinformed. There are however individuals at various stores that wil suprise you with what they know. A major problem I see with Petco selling salt water fish is that their drygoods to support these inhabitants is horrible. Airpump powered skimmers, sub standard lighting systems, etc etc. The trick to getting livestock from petco is to go to the stores on wends of each week that is when new fish are delivered. You also must realize that Petco ....to be continued

Interesting thread. One of my local petco's has a nice saltwater selection. While the tanks are to small for tangs, I purchased the most healthy tang I have ever seen from them. The kid even asked what size tank I was going to put it in, I joked and said I just bought a cute beta bowl and he gasped in horror and said he could not sell it to me haha, then of course I told him I had a nice setup.

In fact I went to 3 other LFS's searching for a healthy yellow tang and came up short handed, I went into the petco to buy dogfood and BAM, they had 3 of them that were super fat, healthy with no issues. And LARGE. Mine is about 4-5" diameter for $34.99 Have had it 2 months now and what a great fish!

I work at both PETCO (top 50 in terms of sales of SW livestock for all PETCOs in the US) and a LFS, it's all about who is running the fish section at that particular store. The petition shouldn't necessarily call for PETCO to stop the sale of SW fish, cuz that isn't going to happen. what it should ask for is better training for its employees (although I'm sure a lot of people like being able to go into PETCO and convincing some employee that doesn't know anything that the $50 dollar fish they want is that $6 goby)
I have comparable losses to the LFS I work at which is one of the nicer ones in the area. I keep a cabinet stocked with cupramine, prazipro, metronidazole, and nitrofurazone (all of which the company does not want me to use) and treat as problems arise. And as far as I know PETCO has no plans to phase out SW, and someone said earlier that stores had a limited budget. This is only partially true, what we can order each week is based on the previous week. If i sell $1000 worth of fish then I can order around $2000 worth of fish the next week.

You work for 2 different competing pet shops, and neither one has a problem with that? Or do they not know about each other? :D

In any event, glad to hear you have well stocked medicine chest, despite the company ;)

Every Petco I have seen not only abuses their fish but their reptiles too. It is the same with the fish, they are kept in sub-optimum conditions, with too low temperatures and dirty cages. People bring these fish/reptiles home, they die from diseases and get turned off wondering what they did wrong.

Petco by me is extremely clean thats out here in jersey and the fact of having to pay for this petition thats garbage scam scam scam!
