Looking for an anemone

I am looking for an anenome to go in my 29 gallon Clarkii tank. The lighting is 130 watts of PC. Flow can be adjusted depending on the requirements. I would like to avoid Carpets and BTAs. I already have a RBTA in my 180. Since this is a small specialized system I would like something more exotic. I was thinking about a M doreensis. Or perhaps a crispa.

For the tank size and lighting you have the BTA would be best choice.
I'd take the BTA from your big tank and go w/ something different in that one.

Not to comfortable about placing any thing other than a BTA in my big tank. I have lots of sps in there and truth be told probably should avoid an anenome all together in that tank.

I would like something a little more exotic is this system. Something that cant normally be kept in a reef. Anthony Calfo once told me that an anenome has no place in a reef tank. I have been going by that since...The only exception has been the large RBTA in my reef.

Your kind of limited because of the lighting. Borderline I would say a BTA. Longshot would be a Long Tenticle anemone. I don't think the light would support either very well unless you get them to park at the top of your rock pile.

A healthy H. crispa will get far too large for that tank. The egdes would curl up over the glass on both sides. This species gets very large, as both myself and davocean can attest.

When I bought mine about 5 yrs ago I'd never seen one bigger than about 5".
Man, had I known!
So now I got a HUGE LTA(20") and Sebae(22" or better)
It was get rid of one or get a bigger tank.
Bigger tank won, building my 180 right now.
(now my smile is about 22")

What about a M doreensis? I guess the recommended tank size for those anenomes are off because I have seen 30 gallons as the "minimum" size needed.

Once again, this is also a large anemone, as mentioned earlier. While it may be listed as 'minimum size', that will basically mean your entire tank will be an anemone. That makes it difficult to place powerheads, do normal maintenance, etc. Providing more space will be better, no matter what, IMHO/IME.

I am looking for good information. I am trying to see what the experianced lot has to say so that I can cross reference that with what the phd's say. I know of a few people in my reef club keeping H.magnificas in tanks below 40 gallons. They seem to be doing well. I was more concerned about the RBTA in the 29 because it is quite large. Much larger than any LTA I have ever seen.

Perhaps the question should be..."How long can I keep a LTA in a 29" If it grows too large I will move it to my prop system. From there I would be able to hold it for sometime.

Just like everything else, the more you feed the faster anemone grow. If you don't feed them too much, they will grow slowly. It does take experiences to guess when you can limit the amount of food and not causing your anemone to go into an irrecoverable spiral down.

My LTA at present is a solid 20" in diameter.
Never had a RBTA so I don't know size comparison but I thought they were smaller.
I'd be concerned in a 29 about intakes and good flow w/out blasting it.
I have both an LTA and sebae in my 90 right now w/mixed reef.
As long as you have that buffer zone between them and corals your OK.
Once they find that happy place they really don't move much.
Some make it sound like they're nomadic!

Man I wish...My wife would kill me. I already have the 180 reef,65 carpet anenome tank,55 gallon softie tank in the basement, 2 15 gallon zoa prop tanks, and two 100 gallon sps prop tanks. Not to mention the sumps.Thank goodness for the revenue generated from the prop system. If not for that I dont think I could even afford the salt. Not to mention this isn't my tank, its my daughters. I don't have enough room in her room to go much bigger. Maybe one day I will put a 65 in there. Believe me, my first thought is to go bigger.

I keep asking my wife to let me put a 2nd mortgage on the house so that I can "consolidate" all of that into my 800 gallon dream tank.

So far she says no...

As for the LTA I am going to do some extensive reading and see if I can come up with a good enviroment in a 30 gallon for it to live comfortably for a year or two. I have an extra 150 watt halide that I could throw into the hood. As for the flow I have some small maxi-streams that I want to try on a wavemaker so I will use that. More than likely my daughter will tire of the clown/anenome tank in year much like she did with the seahorses and Dad will inherit the LTA to put in a empty corner of my one of my tanks.

Does this sound reasonable?
