Looking for large freshwater fish anyone have any ideas ?

JMCAquarium

They are among us!!
I currently have a 5 inch red tail catfish.

I'm looking into a Jardini Arowana and a L-025 or L-026 or L-114 meat eating pleco to go with him.

Anyone have any idea's on other fish id like a mid water one. But i'm open to ideas

Red Snake head
Spotting Ray

Thanks

I don't want to insult you, you've obviously been around the block a few times, but do you know that your red tail cat can easily grow to over 5 feet? Very difficult to find a new home for a 5' eating machine.
If you add a Snakehead that matches the cat's size, you'll soon be left with either one, or the other, my money is on the Snakehead. The Arrowana will give you that mid level action you're looking for.
I never had any luck with fresh water rays. I gave up on fresh water and moved to salt after losing 4 rays and 3 blue "fw Lobsters"
The red tail cat, snakehead and arrowana are big eaters, I don't have to tell you that equates to difficulty keeping water quality in check.

Back in the 70's I keep a South American tank.
Pairs of Uaru, Chocolate Cichlids, Peacock Bass, Green and Gold Severums, and Juraparis.

Oh no, did I accidentally fall into the lounge again??

 I'm telling Debi and Brian to come with their lassos. They'll get you corralled and put you back

I personally like silver arowanas over either jardinis or blacks. I know the latter are much more rare and perhaps more sought after but I don't think they look as nice, or swim as gracefully. It doesn't really matter though because someday the RTC will make a meal out of them anyway. It is not your fault but it is irresponsible to sell these fish that get to large sizes. I dare say that no typical homeowner can accommodate a full grown RTC or nurse shark. At least you seem to know what you are in for. All petshops should be banned from selling fish like iridescent sharks to unsuspecting families with 10 gallon tanks.

Ok, down off of my soap box. To answer your question I really don't know what you can keep with your RTC that he won't try and make a meal of eventually.

Those all have the potential to become pretty big fish. I've had Arowanas get over 2 1/2 feet long pretty quickly.

How big is your tank?

I have kept a redtail before while growing up and would still have him if I didn't have to move to AZ a 3 foot catfish would not make the trip. A Redtail kept in the home aquarium and fed correctly will pretty much stop at 3-4 feet jardini stop at 24-30 inches and a cactus pleco push 24 if fed vigorously. I'm well aware of their sizes and needs I was just looking for suggestions to go with my redtail.
Currently the redtail is in a 90 gallon and when he is ready will be upgraded to a 180.

Ya I agree the snake head was a suggestion and the ray is just cool looking. I also kept a red snake head in a 125 with my redtail growing up and he would tear anything apart if he thought he could eat it id never put one with a non aggressive cat. the redtails are to pretty to have something eating it.

Pacu make good tankmates for the redtail. The size/shape make them hard for the cat to get them into their mouth. They're voracious and sloppy eaters, tough.
I know from experience that silver arrowana will jump out of a tank. I would expect that of the Jardini as well.

Though I seldom if ever recommend this...go to Ocean Floor in Phx. http://oceanfloorstore.com/

They almost always have larger species in stock.

They also have a show sized red tail you can gawk at. They usually have pacu, arowana, cats, etc as well as large cichlids like Oscar.

I called down there before making the journey and was informed
"yes, we have arowana"
do you have jardini arowana juvy's?
"yes we have silver ones for $35"
Dude go check with someone who knows cuz Jardini's dont come in silver and if i drive all the way down there for a arowana and you have common silvers im gonna be rather upset and juvy Jardini's ussually start at $50+.
"oh im sorry sir my boss just informed me that we dont have your kind of arowana just the silver ones, but we get them in stock all the time so call back in a couple weeks"
make sure you know what you talking about before you tell someone you have something that would have been a long drive for nothing. And what do you mean you get them in all the time ? how can you sell that many fish that top out at 2 feet + long are you even educat..."click" i was hung up at some point there.

So no I wont be going there I'll catch a bass out of my pond before going anywhere near ocean floor ...how that place stays in business is beyond me.
Thankyou for the advise though

The Red Tail Cat has a new home at the big aquarium off of Northern and the 303

Ahh PACU I forgotten about them beasts .......hhhmmmm my last RTC I kept solo becuase he was such a big eater. I lived in New Hamshire at the time and lived on a lake so I'd go to the dock and throw my cast net and catch..um what ever and fed him that lol 2 feet later even with my cast net i had to get 50-75 gold fish , 1 pack frozen krill, 10-15 crayfish, 3-4 packs hotdogs for him a month. he was like a big puppy would flip his whiskers out of the edge of the tank when i walked by.

And that is why I don't mention them often. In this case I did because they are one of the few stores that do often carry the very large fish (other than Oscars which you can get at PetSmart).

The PetShop has had small arawana but they are the common ones from what I've seen.
