Lots of talk here lately about Chloramines in our water

If I missed it already, I know for a fact that MDWS uses Chloramine for treatment. It's on their website I believe and I called years ago and they advised the same.

There are 3 cannisters on the bottom right and 4 on the main unit.....

in order from start to finish

10 MICRON PURTREX SEDIMENT FILTER>>>
5 MICRON PURTREX SEDIMENT FILTER>>>
1 MICRON PURTREX SEDIMENT FILTER>>>

CATALYTIC ACTIVATED CARBON>>>
CHLORPLUS 10 CARBON BLOCK>>>
Booster Pump>>>
99 Percent Rejection SpectraSelect Plus 90-GPD RO Membrane 1>>>
99 Percent Rejection SpectraSelect Plus 90-GPD RO Membrane 2>>>
DI 1
DI 2

this is how it was hooked up when I moved into my new DT from the old ...I had cracked one of the RO canisters when I moved it and went back to just 1 RO but since have purchased another to reset it up for processing of the waste to get a better efficiency out of water consumption....I was using a 150 gpd and now am going back to the 2 new spectraselects plus 90s

I also have 2 RO membrane canisters as well which cuts waste water in 1/2 and produces 2 times faster with mine. Its a no brainer for me and the savings in less waste water will pay for the second RO membrane in 6 months or so. I too have a unit from The Filter Guys. I will probably be adding a 2nd sediment and 2nd DI in the future with my new build to increase efficiency even further.

Well with all the talk of chloramines in broward, I went ahead and ordered a Dual Home Reef to/di with Catalytic Carbon ,75GPD, from air, water&ice.
Now the question is what do I do with my mighty mite ro/di unit?

And how often should I change the catalytic carbon?

Jim from filterguys posted above, every 6 months; I think eddie changes his every 3 months. I'll be monitoring mine but will probably push it to every 12 months.

I dont think broward county is to blame, I believe its the city.

I know the water here in Plantation has way less TDS than surrounding areas.

Yeah I'm not blaming they county just a blanket statement since people from throught out Broward are having issues. I'm in Pembroke Pines.

Mike- Its not about blame, but about us, as responsible reefkeepers to be aware of what is going on, and making sure we take care of our inhabitants the best we can, :D

I try to change the Chloramine filter I use every 1.5 mos. Maybe it's just Dade, but I seem to burn through DI resin and the Chl filters quickly.

Thats true.

Due to this forum and the good fishkeeper i am, I will be putting in new filters. ( ;

are you flushing the ro membrane each use you would be surprised how much tds goes directly into the di the first 5 min its turned on

To preserve my di, I added a 3 way valve between my ro membrane and di. I open the valve to bypass the di to let the tds creep run out. It's also comes in handy for filling up 5 gallon jugs for the water cooler

where is your restrictor pin is it one of those that are pushed into the hose right after the ro membrane.....put your DIY flush before it if it is so that you are opening it up and letting it flush

So it's not good to flush the ro membrane every time?

put a meeter directly after the ro membrane and watch the tds reading skyrocket imedialtly when the unit is turned on dont close the flush untill the numbers have come all the way back into range of efficiency of the membrane or close too it

Yeah that's what I do, the brs 5 stage has the flush kit right after the membrane before the di and after di

I bought a pressure gauge because I'm thinking about upgrading my RODi and I wanted to see if I needed a booster pump. First I installed it on the line that is connected to the sink to check the house pressure.

Second I removed it since I had already installed a quick shutoff valve there and I moved the gauge to the line that goes into my RO membrane.

I'm not even sure if these were the right places to check pressure and for some reason both readings were pretty much exactly the same even with the water running, from the sink or with the RODi turned on. I did not notice a drop in pressure.
Did I do something wrong here? My pressure appears to be constantly over 70 and basically at like 75-76. I did notice that it was at 0 when the RO is not running but if I open the valve to let water out it goes to 76.

Does this mean I don't need a booster pump?

Most municipal water systems shoot for a household pressure of 50-80 psi. Filmtec membranes operate at 50 psi or higher pressure, other brands usually operate at 60-65 psi best. If the pressure is under 50 psi, say in the 30 -40 psi range a booster pump is recommended for best operating pressure. Since your water is warmer a little under 50 psi may be OK, our winter water temp drops down to 42 degrees so our production drops way down.

According to Jim at the Filter Guys, you should be fine without a booster pump.:bounce1:
