Thanks Ziggy. I am curious to see how "even" it dries. I took the picture right after I cleaned up and I can see some wet spots. Now that I got the hang of it, I will be staining the doors tomorrow and work on the canopy.

you started working on it yet?? how even did it dry?

The stand dried pretty nice. I just touched it up with a 400 grit sandpaper. I will give it a thinner 2nd coat in a day or so.

Just a quick update. I spent most of my extra time today fine tuning the stand and doors with a good sand and paint. I think I will be ready to stain the canopy and doors tomorrow.

I liked this shot. The inside of the canopy is too nice.

I also put the first layer of stain on the stand. Here is a picture of it before I leave you guys for the evening. I'm off to watch Kobe and the Lakers school my Kings.

Mark -

I lreally ike that stain color. In fact, that is the color I am looking for to stain my semi-DIY stand. I am also using red oak veneer and doors. Please let me know the brand name and color of that stain. (Hopefully it's not custom brewed.)
Thanks very much.

I was afraid of that - it looks very good...

That is funny
I used 1 part espresso, 3 part rosewood, 6 part brown mahogany, and 5 part water. I tried to match a few pieces in my house. It took me all day to find the look I wanted. To tell you the truth, once I put it on, I knew it was worth it.
I got my supplies at Woodcraft.

Todays progress was all about the canopy and doors. I had to take off the front to stain and I added 3 holes along the back for cords and such.

I really wasn't too thrilled with the stand so I took a quick sand to it and restained it again. Just like anything, you learn so much just by doing. I liked it so much that I did the same thing to the doors and front. When working with an open grained wood, a stain will raise the grain and I wanted to knock it down before I start the poly.

I also bought a wood rasp and I went around all the platform edges to make sure that my surface is nice and level. I have always enjoyed woodworking and this project has allowed me to try some things out.

Btw, have you decided on lights?

I made six holes in the top of the canopy. One on each back corner of the 3 LAmini's to help vent the heat ;)

Ok, I have a question. I just made my measurements for my plumbing holes. Would you guys recommend cutting out a box or drilling with a hole saw. I am sure it it not that big of deal, but I thought I might as well ask.

I was a little apprehensive taking those measurements. I have had nightmares that the bulkhead or the tightening washer would hit the 2X6 and I would have to find some other way to structurally support the tank.

I should sleep a little better than usual tonight.

I think you should take a hole saw. It will look cleaner.

hey . nice tank ! im building a 180g also. what kind of return pump are you using? i might get the same.

I will be using a sequence snapper for my return pump. It is rated at 2400 gph.

Don't you want around 5x turnover in the sump so your skimmer, etc. have enough time to properly filter the water??

I will have plenty of head loss as I am dividing my plumbing and running in to and from my chiller, a john guest to feed the aqua c reactor, as well as feeding my fluid reactors and I am only running 1' return lines. That is why I went with the snapper rather than the dart. You can always valve them back. Good lookin out though.

I have been thinking about the canopy design for some time because I really was undecided about the way it would finish. So, today I got out the saw and....

I guess it will be interesting how this turns out.
