Matt's 5000ltr Display

Your surge tank is so far outside the box it's outside the house.

I thought you were going on a trip to the Maldives, but if that were true you'd be showing us all your holiday snaps. ;)

I got back on Weds Dave. I took a few photos and shot some video whilst diving. I just need to sort them out.

A couple more pics of progress.

The external frame is for cladding. The space between the tank and external frame will house insulation

I will be using two trace heaters on the external pipes. The heater has its own thermostat which is triggered when the temp drops below 5 degrees. The cable then heats up preventing the pipe from freezing

The cable from the first heater wraps around the surge and overflow pipes.

I added the first layer of insulation

That looks like quite the primal force, Matt. How will it disperse when the tank is full of water? Is it your aim to just have it deflect a bit off the front pane, or will you add a diffuser of some kind at the outlet?

that looks like quite the surge!

Thanks Elliot..I am pretty pleased with it

Hi Dave, there is some pipework yet to be installed. At the moment the outlet into the tank is just the bulkhead. Eventually there will be pipework to bring the outlet flush to the front face of the weir and a 45 bend to direct the surge diagonally back towards the far right corner of the tank.

Some pics of last nights progress...

I saw some moonlights a couple of years ago that I liked. Unfortunately you can only get them in the states. When I enquired back then marine depot wanted nearly $200 just for delivery! I recently found another US supplier who only wanted $70 delivery and that included a load of loc line stuff. So I gots them.

The leds emit a wide beam that should be quite effective

Each side of the centre brace has two sets. The ones nearest the front point directly down and the ones to the back point down at 45 degrees to each corner

I finally had chance to wire up one of the 1kw ballasts and install one of the AFM Marine 1kw bulbs.

IMG_2242.jpg

I am very very happy with how they are. The 1kw AFM Marine bulb is 14.5k and the 400w radium on the LHS blend perfectly with a really nice colour IMO. I am thinking that I wont bother with the 400w of t5s that I had planned.

Forgive the "blue" on the pic...just crappy iphone pictures.

The inside of the front fascia will have some insulation to try and help control the DT environment

IMG_2243.jpg

...and also some sound proofing. I dont expect a lot of noise and all the pumps etc are in the fish room bit but the 400w ballasts have active cooling and there are a fair few fans above the DT..I hope to eliminate as much noise as possible.

Matt, would you mind doing a little recap of how a surge tank works and your ideas behind it?

Hi Brett

A surge is simply dumping a lot of water quickly into the DT. IMO it is extremely good at providing random flow in a tank and stirring up detritus that otherwise may have settled.
I looked into the various ways of creating them and whilst the most common and cheapest methods (bourneman and carlson) work well they have some side effects of noise and bubbles. I could have lived with the side effects but I found a method of having the surge without them by using an actuated ball valve. Both the bubbles and the noise are created when air enters the surge pipe but the ABV avoids air entering the system so you get all of the benefits of a surge without the negatives.

Some video shot while diving in the Maldives in November

Matt. Just what I needed on this Tuesday night :D

Consider yourself lucky to have personally witnessed the enigma that is Manta birostris ! Seems you captured some other fairly uncommon species footage as well.

How was the health of the reefs in the Maldives, at the locations you visited ? There has been an ongoing fight to curb the destruction/decline of the Maldivian Reef System(s) ... It's one location that I personally hold in high esteem.

Again, thanks for the video ... I need to get myself back there, it's been entirely too long and who knows what kind of condition it will be in even 5years from now :(

Truly sad.

Hi coralreefdoc

The reefs weren't too bad. I dived half a dozen or so different sites and while there were large sections of storm damaged reef the majority were ok.

Man I wish I could swim. That was a cool video.

Most of the manta cleaning stations are pretty shallow at about 12-15 metres..so you would necessarily need to be a qualified or advanced diver.. You would need to be brave though if you can't swim!!
It's easy. They just tie a weight belt to you and throw you in.

Dave.M
Ha..I don't foresee a career as a diving instructor in your future Dave !

Hi Matt

Good to see some good progress on the tank and some intresting kit not seen on other builds. Im looking forward to seeing the surge working.
Nice to see you having a well earned rest on your holidays. Thanks for the vid, nice to watch with snow falling outside.

Cheers Martin
