Sounds like it is worth a trip to set up shop and help out. When are you going?

:D

When we write a justification for our trip and locate two VIPs, named Jeff and John, along with several others (Mike, you going? you might be the only one with a real chance of entering the country ;)

I thought I saw somewhere that the range of Omansis extends slightly beyond the range of the King's control.

Now all we need is an honest exporter and US customs permits! :D

I wonder if anybody breeds those clowns in captivity in Oman....

Not yet.

Visiting the country is not a problem though; it is beautiful and the people are friendly and hospitable. They would love for everyone to visit and do some diving -- and beautiful diving it is!

The ministry of tourism has some efforts underway to increase tourism and increase the world's awareness of Oman to foreign travelers.

HM does care deeply about the aquatic resources of the country though and does not want to see them exploited -- it shows in his (appointed) ministries as well, so it will have to and should be approached delicately.

According to the ministry of the environment in Yemen, they have seen Omani clownfish in the NE waters there too.

Oops, sorry to hijack the Mcc. thread - back to the black tomatoes :)

It will require several more visits and talks on both sides and probably won't be as simple as collecting broodstock for export, but all involved at all levels are interested in moving the project forward in the right way. Time will tell ;)

As Scott said - "to help out". US breeders have rather substantial experience in spawning rare and endemic species of clowns, some have raised fry.

After scanning some reliable info about Oman, it seems rather obvious that the country cares about its' international public perception/image and is very hospitable. It is also rather reasonable of them not to be willing to simply sell Oman clowns to overseas collectors. Nobody disposes of national heritage that way....

As demonstrated by ORA, captive fish breeding is profitable, if the market is cornered correctly, and there is general public agreement about purchasing captive bred species of fish and corals. Also, look at the folks in AU, they made seadragons and other animals available to public aquariums in the US, for example, for research and breeding...

There are precedents of international cooperation/exchange, there is experience, there is money to make sure next generation will see Oman clowns with their own eyes.. All power to people living today :)

Ryan (Mrblue) says they are his CB being offered/pre-sold in the US. They haven't shipped yet and there is some snag.

I am going to be curious to see how much LA wants for the McC's. I could have got a pair for $6000 and I am sure they are coming from the same supplier.

I was just saying the same thing today. My guess would be about $4000 each.
