Mhucasey's SPS obsession

I had some questions for you a few pages back but you stopped attending my thread, mighty Lord Acro. I'm using 10 drops per day of MicroE and the cyano is almost gone btw, corals are looking good too:thumbsup:

Considering starting the micro e soon, myself..
Matt, what's your total system volume?

I actually just picked up MicroE, to add to my Aquaforest dosing....mostly from reading about manganese in biggles thread.....

I am hoping it helps kill some other algae in the tank (some strain of un-kill-able byropsis...not getting my hopes up though

I was worried about adding it at first but it may be doing what Biggles is theorizing, the Cyano went way down, other algae a are barely there, and coral color is fantastic.

Update: Alk at 5.7 yesterday, 6.1 tonight. No real visible impact on corals, color is improving everywhere.

This is the wild colony of Loripes I got on March 5. It had been under Radions in the LFS for 7 months. This is March 8:

I was unable to kill this bubble tip and now it's come back almost 100%. BTAs baffle me:

I think you found your Canadian doppelgänger :D

lol.. careful, If I were Andrew I would take great offence to that. Me being Canadian and all

Are you starting to notice abnormal tissue growth on multiple acros? that cherry popper is starting to show signs like that loripes

Good to hear the cyano is abating and the colors popping again, i think it's always a case of 'personalizing' any of these proven methods to each individual system it's being applied to Matt as using a calcium reactor as opposed to dosing might impact the system overall in more ways than we realize - just an example so you know what i mean.

Once the cyano is all gone for a few weeks i would slowly back off a drop a day until you find the spot that is just enough to keep the bad guys away and keep it at that dose long term :)

I do notice that many of the pieces you add tend to 'puff' up in growth rather than having the sharper pronounced growing tips we normally associate with good growth. Our two TDF branches are a good example of the drastic difference in growth i am talking about. I can see it already in that after pic of the loripes, colors are getting good but it's looking 'fuzzy' at the tips rather than sharp if you know what i mean. Not sure if Kevin means the same thing but i have noticed it. I am in no way slagging your stuff so don't get the sh#ts like Kevin has over my slagging of Canada, i just wanted to know if you noticed the difference between our TDF's growth.

Thanks for the tip on the MicroE - i really long to get some Manganese Chloride and isolate it from the Iron that comes with the MicroE and KoralColor, I bet the effect would be even better.

There are lots of sharper, fresh growing tips on many of the corals, I actually had been missing them for a while and they reappeared after changing the bulbs. I have a lot of flow in the tank, and so many corals thicken up some before growing, but even some of the delicate branched corals are putting out growth. What looks like good flow to me is more than a lot of tanks I see.

You can see some on the Radion Acro here:

I still have a bit high residual Magnesium from a long time back, around 1500, and I have confirmed that the sort of bubbly puffy tips is caused by higher magnesium levels and high light together. I am letting the Magnesium levels fall to between 1300-1400, I've noticed that the effect has been going away on the Acros as the levels have fallen.

That Loripes is so happy to have some light- i kind of freaked out a bit after it was in the tank for a week or so, i thought it was covered in pests or losing tissue when I looked at it one morning. It turned out it not only was putting out polyps from the tips, but tiny new polyps were busting out all over the thing where they weren't present before. Here are some close-ups to show you. any insight on the puffing up would be welcome...

Welcome, and thanks! Well at page 16 I was in process of constructing the dual tanks, so Ill catch you up to where the system is at now:

2 Starfire rimless tanks, one 36X48X16(SPS Tank), the other 36X28X22(Flubber Tank).

The SPS tank is lit with an 8X39Watt Sunpower and a 6X39Watt sunpower, total 14 bulbs. The flubber tank has one 6X39Watt Sunpower over it.

The water from both tanks drain to a common sump and are returned by a modded Laguna Pond pump.

Water from the sump is pumped by a controllable Tunze Silence pump to an external recirculating skimmer, a Reef Octopus Diablo DC-200Ext.

I currently use a Vertex Zeolite reactor with a liter of Stones in it but I will be moving to an Avast Media reactor and combine Zeolites, Carbon, and Phosphate minus(GFO) in one reactor. Im using the Aquaforest system currently, I switched away from using the AIO pellets in December.

I Run a Geo 618 calcium reactor with water pulled through it using a cole-parmer peristaltic pump. The CO2 is fed from an AquariumPlants CarbonDoser electronic regulator.

Top-off is handled by a Tunze osmolator.

The whole thing is controlled by an Neptune Apex controller with 2 8-outlet power bars and one 4-outlet power bar. I also have the variable speed module, pH, Temp, and ORP probes.

I think thats it:p

Thank for the info, I have been pretty set on an in wall tank for a while, after seeing yours and the way the acros grow in wondering if this would be good. What do you think about 108x24x30 (30" height).

I'm not big on tall tanks personally. I like to be able to easily reach to the bottom. Also, its more difficult to light a tall tank adequately. If I had to choose I'd want more width and max 24" height.
