Minh's Anemone collection and thoughts regarding various anemone species

Hi everybody,
I am a member here at RC forever but never have a thread about my anemones. Well here is the thread.
I started with salt water aquarium back in 1980 and have keep and breed fish as long as I can remember from Guppies when I was 5 or 6 and Beta fighting fish as a teenager. Clownfish and Anemone were my first salt water love. I killed my first anemone (and the tank raised Ocellaris) way back in 1980. There was not a lot of information back then. I did not buy another anemone until 1997. In the between time, I keep various types of salt water fishtank. Prior to keep a reef tank in 1997, I have keep semi-reef tank with reverse flow under-gravel filter. Keep Caulerpa algae and various fish. I did not keep full blown reef tank until 1997.
After all these years, I am still attached and love clownfish, especially A. percula, and host anemones. I have a small collections of anemones under my care, from a S. gigantea that is 12 years in captivity (most of these time under the care of another reefer) to a red S. haddoni that I have own for the last few weeks. The anemone that under my direct care the longest is a green H. malu, going on 9 years.

This particular Malu was lost in a tank crack. The purple one is the female and the green is the male. I got them to spawn and got fertilized eggs inside the Purple Malu but my tank crack right after that and I lost the female. I have try to spawn them ever since but so far not able to locate another female. I got two male Malus at this time. H. malu sexually reproduce by internal fertilization and release fully formed babies anemones by the mother. I think we can raise these guy in captivity. You can see the fertilized eggs insider the purple Malu tentacles. They were moving independently inside the mother when I took these pictures. It is really too bad that I lost this anemone, or else we/I would be so far ahead in sexually reproduce H. malu<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" LatentStyleCount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" LatentStyleCount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]-->. Over the last three years, I was able to collected three specimen of this species. One multicolor, one purple and one green. My green Gigantea have a lot characteristic of Haddoni carpet and I am thinking that it could be a hybrid Gigantea/Haddoni. I am putting a large tank together and see if I can get them to spawn. Will see what I will get out of these.

Multicolor Gigantea, I got this one about 12 months. Initially he was tiny and bleached but with good care he is quite a looker

I have had multiple Magnifica in the past. I think I was the first to document splitting of Magnifica on line here at RC but at this time I have no Magnifica.

What an amazing collection indeed! Thank you for sharing. It truly inspires to go and upgrade my tank or get (after convincing the wife) another one. :lolspin:

Truly beautiful anemones. On a side note, how old should my system be before I try to add an anemone? My water parameters are ideal, but I have heard, the older the system the better luck you will have with an anemone. Thanks for sharing!

The purple Gig is my Fav for sure. Beautiful all though.. I think I am going to need to save up and add a RED Haddoni at some point too..

About 6 months. Some of that is for allowing the tank to stabilize, and some is to allow the reefer to learn how to care for the tank. A BTA is an ideal first anemone since it is the least demanding of those available to the hobbyist.

Minh, you inspire me. I now have 2 anemones in my 75 and plan on more.

+1. What anemones do you have? I ask because I'm in a similar situation. I have 1 RBTA and 1 LTA in my 72g. I've been thinking about adding one or two more, so I'm now researching whether I can add more and which kind of nems. I would appreciate understanding a bit more about your thoughts on how you'll decide what to add... and what not to. Thanks.

Minh, I can't stop by RC without going over those amazing pics and drooling over your nem collection! Thanks again for sharing not only your collection through pics, but your experience.

Thanks everybody. They do require a lot of care. I am trying to work out who can be with who and narrow down the number of systems.

+1. What anemones do you have?

BTA and an Atlantic Sun Anemone/Stichodactyla helianthus. I mistakenly got the sun anemone when I wanted a gig, so I'm just going to keep it and use it as a litmus test to make sure me and my tank are up to it. I'll eventually sell it and get the gig I want.

Yeah, that is a good idea. I've been thinking and researching about what would be a good addition, keeping in mind how much I need to learn and how much I know about my tank. Thanks for your input.
