Minimalist Aquascaping

ardeus, that's a great looking pic! I really like its simplicity. Looks a bit 'shopped though.. Is it just the background that you darkened?

Er... it's completely made up :), It was a model I made for a tank I set up a few years ago. I ended up not completing the setup because I had to move.

I'm always on the move and carrying a dog and a small reef around :)

Here is my 40 breeder. Water going in tomorrow. I will be replacing the rock on the bottom right with a piece of two of "live" rock to seed. Going to be BB SPS.

are these rocks leaning up against the overflow? it looks good

For a made up reef, that's awesome! future totm ! :)

I started the tank, got the rocks in the right shapes and positions, already had a sarcophyton there, but the tank did not live long enough to turn out like I planned. Here's another :)

This sandwich-reef is obviously impossible, but I always asked myself why hasn't anyone thought about at least suspending some rocks in the aquarium, like inverted islands or stalactites: only sand in the bottom and islands hanging from the top... it wouldn't be such a hard thing to accomplish.

ooooow my head hurts

No. Here is my build thread.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1803039&page=3

I drilled the large rock with the bulbous bottom and glued (Jurassic Gel) an fiberglass rod into the HDPE cutting board. The other rocks are glued onto the big rock. The little overhang rock on the bottom left was done the same way. I am still working on the bottom right. Going to add a piece of live rock to seed it when I get back from FL next week.

Some of these minimalistic designs are absolutely stunning. I can't believe nobody's mentioned chingchai's large SPS tank. It's a perfect example of minimalism.

I also love the bare bottom look combined with a really minimalistic rockscape. I'm trying to decide whether to bare bottom or not - I hadn't even considered it before.

What kind of lighting are you using on that? how well do SPS do in it? is there any form of filtration?
I think it would be neat to set up a cube just like that.

I've had a filter running on it for the past few months, but took it out the other day when I placed the mp10 in. For lighting I have a par38 bulb and so far my sps seem to be loving it. I've had good growth on my birdsnest frags.

Lots of nice tanks in here for sure. I'm setting up a 120 and have gotten a few ideas. I will not be doing a rock wall. All of my tanks have always strayed away from the standard wall of rock in one way or another. Before I even saw this thread I had planned on a column and an island maybe two in there. Some of the tanks are a bit too minimal for me though. If you plan on having fish I think that rock helps fish feel "at home" plus we all know how well it helps filtration. I think a lot of people have done it a little better than others while providing open areas and at the same time plenty of places to hide for our wet friends. I feel like the big thing with all of these, is they are not your standard rock wall from one side of the tank to the other. Islands, columns, canyons and caves! Awesome tanks!
Untamed it looks like you had a pretty decent amount of bryopsis. How was that to get rid of? I have heard a lot of people had big issues with it.
I have been considering ordering some Marco Rocks and seeding with a couple of rocks from another tank I have to sort of limit the amount of pest things I introduce into the tank. Although not sure if that makes things too sterile or not. But Marco Rock does look really nice.

Just updated my build thread after I swapped all my stuff over but thought I would add them here as well since I am also going for the minimalist look :)

Great article BTW^

Andre, thanks for posting! I'll have to read that article tonight. I'm sure it's a great addition

On a side note: 50,000 views ;)

Just read all 20 pages. Great stuff. I'm in the process of doing a 75 and this is just what I was looking for. I was thinking like 40 lbs from Dr. Mac. Or maybe a mix of 30 live, and like 10 from Marco. Any suggestions? FWIW, sand gives me way to much trouble, bb all the way.
