I've seen some posts that the large PPW can have startup issues. Anyone have any input?

I had a knock (1) when it started. but it never failed to start or "stated backwards" smaller cones should be able to do 35 easy, I got 34 with my 200 extreme. (29.6 was start up, after 2-3 weeks it went up :D )

That sounds about right. Some people have problems and some dont. There are a lot of variables such as running depth, skimmer body, volute differences and some pumps are just stronger than others.

Yea I never tried the PPW in the stock volute. In my mini airstar I have more noise starting the CnC pinwheel than the LPPW but after starter startup the PPW is louder. I weighedthem both and don't remember exactly but the LPPW is heavier than the ms/CnC style.

The askoll is probably too much for the 200. But you can get them on the MS website.

Thanks Hop

Wow, coming up on a month with no posts. Thought I would revive the thread:D

MSX250 with an extended neck. Running the stock pinwheels right now, but keep meaning to swap one of the pumps for an Askoll. unfortunately too many projects going right now. This is about 5-6 days of skimming on a lightly stocked 190 with about 300 total gallons.

You are probably right Scott:D Unfortunately on top of a huge opportunity that came my way that I need to focus on, the great air conditioner gods were not on my side this year. My entire reefing budget I had set aside for my pre-summer upgrade went to a new AC unit:( But it looks like yours is rockin! Did you pre-order another brand? I have to admit I was looking at the big one they have coming out soon...

Fatboy, I have not been on the MS website in a while, but the extended cups were only for the 250 and 300 when I bought mine. Maybe they came out with one. But personally you sacrifice flow-through for dwell time, so it really is a personal preference. This is why I want to slap an askoll on mine.

MSX 250 or 300

MSX 250 or 300

I was thinking of buying a MSX 250 but now the 300 is only $20 dollars more. Would it just be better to get the 300 since the cost is almost the same? My sump is a 100 gallon rubbermaid so size isn't an issue. I see a lot of people talk about how great the 250 is for the money, but I haven't seen very many posts about the 300. The few I have seen said the pumps weren't stong enough for the extra volume.

My opinion is that the 300 lacks the oomph. Adding a askoll or having the third sicci like the octo would be my choice... Basically, why settle for less:D

I pretty much agree with that. You have to have very aggressively meshed Sicces. or use an Askoll instead.

Hop, bummer about the AC unit! Sounds expensive.

I like it, but I swap between the two every few months:lol: I think I pull more with the stock cup, but the stuff with the extended neck smells worse:lol: I just can't make up my mind;)

I just installed the large atb purple pinwheel on my msx160 tonight. I am definitely having startup issues. I get a loud clicking noise and skimmer won't start up. However, I lift the skimmer up a few inches in the water while running for a couple seconds, and it starts up and no more clicking. Also, today when I was reinstalling the skimmer I accidently set off my foat switch causing too much top off water to enter my sump. As such, I am currently running the skimmer with about a 12 inch water height in my sump which I know is way too high. By tomorrow, evaporation will cause my sump to go back to a normal level at about 8.5 inches. Hopefully then I will have less of a start up problem.

SJM817,
Can you please give me the exact dimensions of your skimmer the MSX250, with a the Askoll pump. I was going to order this, but my sump has very limited space. Darn baffles in the sump, I am almost debating if I should drain it and cut them out. Thanks in advance.

I just received my new Mini-S cone, and I can't figure out how the Sicce pump fits on the skimmer. It looks like it should have some sort MPT, but both are different sizes. Does anyone know if there is a part that should have came with it or just DIY?

There isn't much point in doing that. Since this is a DIY, the pump can be positioned in different places on the body which can change the footprint. You can also use a different type of connection to the body instead of the big Union like I am which will make it a lot smaller as well. If you are interested in doing this, I would contact Marine Solutions, give them the space you have to work with (what it it?) and see if they can configure one that fits in your sump. You also want it to be close to 8" deep in the sump, so take a look at that.
