My 112G Cube Build Thread. I'm baaaaaaack!!

I promised a picture of the place where the new tank will sit so here it is:
i-xPdHLtt-X2.jpg

Notice the 2 sets of outlets along the wall. Those are 2 dedicated circuits i had someone put in for me. The tank will be sitting directly in front of those outlets in-between the couch and the tray tables. For perspective, each large tile on the floor is 1 foot in length. The tank footprint will be 3' x 3'. The french doors have more than enough clearance to swing open completely. Where i'm standing when i tookthe picture is the kitchen area which is about 2 steps higher than the back room/den.

You putting any equipment outside again?

Since i'm not planning to run a chiller a calcium reactor or a kalkwasser reactor, i didn't think there was a need for any additional equipment storage. My only challenge spacewise will be for a top-off reservoir.

There is a wet bar in the same room that i could store the ro/di unit under. Just gotta come up with a safe/accident proof and stealthy way to house a good sized water reservoir somewhere in the room. Maybe i could get a custom made enclosure built to fit under the wet bar sink too. There is no way i will be hard-plumbing the ro/di directly to the top-off system. Too risky.

Very cool Ramon
Shirley will hook you up with corals
I will hook you up with fish :)

LOL! Sweet! Sounds like I need to plan for a reef-warming party. Does Marine Depot have a registry? :D

Thanks Pierce. I think that helps narrow my pump choices down to at least a DC model. Just gotta figure out which brand. If i hold out long enough maybe the new models you mentioned will be out.

Hey Shirley! Will definitely hit you up when i'm ready.
On my previous tank, i had the actinics on about 12 hours a day and had all lamps on about 5 hours a day. I had more than enough growth.

I'm with you about supplemental lighting with LED's as it also gives it a nice shimmer effect too. The new PM's from ATI have LED's integrated: http://www.reefgeek.com/lighting/le...e/36-2x75w-led-8x39w-t5-led-powermodule.html#

They sure are tempting too. LED strips for retrofitting existing PM's would be cool too but i'm not sure they have some powerful enough and small enough to mount onto a PM's without looking really odd. If you come across any, please let me know! For now i think i'll stick with the PM's. Maybe next year, or if Reefgeek has some refurbs on the LED/T5 PM's i'll switch sooner. :)

That's a great fixture. I saw one a RAP last year and it's look amazing. an 8 bulb would be perfect for you tank.

Perfect for my tank....painful to my budget. Maybe if i can sell my reactors, sump, and a couple pumps, i'll pull the trigger on this fixture.

C'mon Ramon we need some more pictures on this thread...

I know, i know. At this point unless you want photos of my dog in funny poses, i don't really have much else to post. The sump should be coming this week (hopefully) and the stand probably next week. Once i get those, the progress should pick up. Meanwhile, i'm watching your build and hoping to learn a thing or 2. :D

Did some digging in my garage and found some vintage reefing equipment from about 15 years ago.

Anyone remember these?

I'm thinking it might be good to use for biopellets. Anyone think it will work?

I still have that lil sand filter in storage too. It worked great for years on my reef still I started dosing calcium then it was constantly clogging.

It might be worth a shot for bio-pellets.

Haha. Another old school reefer with old school equipment.
Was gonna put it up for sale, but this idea does look sort of promising.

Welcome back!!! Great looking startup, excited to see more!!

Thanks!

Great build so far, im subscribed.

I like the mounting tabs to bolt the skin onto, I guess you'll just screw and glue them in from the back?

also, any idea of the dimensions between the 2 tabs for the DJ strip as I'd like to do a similar design

thanks! -Eric

Just a little update. Mike and i headed out to Aaron's store this afternoon to pick up my tank. Finally.

Small store, but packed full of some good stuff and super clean systems. Nice family too. Thankfully his store is far from me....otherwise, i'd be taking out a 2nd mortgage.

The tank and stand came out exactly as i expected....perfect. The stand actually looks too nice to cover, but i know my wife won't allow it into the house like that. Built like an army tank and amazing to look at.
The aquarium is typical Leemar good quality. No complaints there.

The trip out was nice. No traffic, cool weather and the shop was easy to find. The trip back was a little nerve wracking with my 2 new babies hanging out the back of a truck on the 110 freeway but all went very smooth with no problems.

Here is Mike's truck, backed up in the driveway ready to be unloaded.

So here are some pictures of the tank and stand sitting in my garage:

The sump from John is still pending, but he is promising to deliver it by tomorrow. Let's see if he holds up to that promise.

By this time tomorrow, i should be posting a sweet looking sump for everyone to see.

Big thanks out to Mike (Solitude) for lending his truck and helping me out. He and I go way back so it was good to catch up on things and hang out for the afternoon.
