I think either way will work. If you notice the shape of these things with the little bumps on top. I think that's to ensure that if you do stack them on top of each other, water can flow properly between them to maximize their efficiency. Come by any time.
Yeah, i was planning to run a refugium as well but with these in my sump, i'm thinking i won't need to anymore. That's what i did with my last setup. I had a refugium chamber designed but i just ended up throwing a bunch of live rock in there instead. Worked out great.
For the blox, they asked how my system was going to be designed and if i was planning to run any live rock or a sandbed. I said no live rock and about a 1" sand bed and they recommended 20lbs of the blox.

Very interesting! Since I took down my frag setup in my sump, I have all this space now. I was thinking about miracle mud, but these Vidarocks look promising. You'll need to keep us all posted on your experience with them!

I am using about 300 lbs of live rock on the display and another 100 -150 lbs of rubble, medium and large rocks in the sump but they are not as porous
Also few hundred pound of sand ( special grade )
I email them and ask for the price for 40 lbs to start since this stuff looks really porous.

Just a quick update.
I picked up the sump tray this past Friday from John and it looked awesome, however, when i actually went to cut the plywood support piece to match it, i realized that the dimensions were waaay off. Looks like John misread the sketch i gave him and gave it a footprint of 31" x 31" with notched out corners when i asked for a 35" x 35" footprint instead. John says he will redo the tray and have it done this week. Will update and send pictures when its all here. If anyone is looking for a 31" x 31" tray, i'm sure John will let it go for cheap!
I've been working with Merrit at Aqua-tecture selecting the ceramic rock for the main display. Looks like i've got it narrowed down to 2 bonsai structures and a branch structure. Will see what happens and will post pictures when i get them.
Also, got all the plumbing parts in and started laying it out. Wife was laughing at me while i sat in my room staring at all the pieces. Some pictures of the rough layout below. I still have other parts on order while i debate the final design. Got most of the fittings from www.usplastic.com, a combination of Sch40 and Sch80. Some of the specialty white fittings came from www.flexpvc.com and the valves came from www.pvcfittingsonline.com. One reason i went with Sch80 is because the bulkhead holes in the overflow were drilled for 1 1/4" Spears bulkheads for strength, quality and reliability. Then everything else sort of followed suit. Plus, i really like the dark gray plumbing color. I know its overkill but I just thought it looked cleaner. Why not?
Debating whether i should put a gate valve on the emergency drain or not just in case i need to seal it off for some reason. Maybe will just swap it out for a ball valve instead and keep the gate valve as backup for maintenance.
This Sunday i hope to start working on the face framing for the stand and maybe do a little plumbing.
Still need to place the order for the ATI Hybrid lights and the DC return pump. After that, i won't have any more excuses to not get the tank up and running!

Now you have me thinking I never thought of a 24", I'm looking to get the 36". Im debating on weather to get the 4 or 8 bulb.

Looks good. IMO, a gate valve on the emergency drain is overkill. I've been running Herbie style in my overflow and have never needed to plug the emergency drain.
Is the "T" after the return pump to feed the fuge area?

Good to know about the emergency drain. I guess i'll just leave it wide open then. Yeah, the T is to feed the fuge. The emergency drain will also feed it a little bit too, but only a trickle.
LOL. Aaron is a good guy to deal with for sure. I'll probably get my lights and pump through him as well.

Another update.
Finally got the sump tray from Advanced Acrylics on Sunday. Everything measured out as expected. Although it took longer than I wanted, its finally here and i was able to continue with my build. Here are some pics of my progress this weekend.

Also finished the face framing on Sunday.
This coming weekend i'm hoping to finish building the doors. Then the following weekend will be sanding/staining. During the week i'm going to see if i can finish up the plumbing as well so i can do a leak test while i'm still in the garage. The rocks from Aqua-tecture should be in tomorrow. Will post pics of those when i get the chance.

Looking really good, Great choice on selecting aqua-tecture. Have you made your final on what size lights after all? From the looks Ill get 24" 8bulb as Ive seen on other threads this size was well recommended by a Wholesaler for a 36x30" tank sps dominant or 4 bulb for mixed reef.

What other threads? I've been looking for examples but couldn't find anything conclusive. I still haven't decided as I haven't been convinced that it will work from someone who has personally done it.
