My 120 filled mostly with SPS

Hi

how do you like the 2x tunze 6105 in your tank? how's the flow? is it too powerful or just about right? I am thinking of upgrading my tank from 75 to a 120. I have been going back and forth trying to decide between 3x6095 vs 2x6105. Do you think two powerful pumps are better than 3 weaker ones?
What kind of controller do you have to control your pumps?

Thanks,
Bao

Sorry for the late response. I do like the 6105s. I have them on the 7096 controller. I have one set to 40% to 100% and the other 60% to 100% in six second increments (40% for six seconds, then ramping up to 100% for six seconds, then down to 40% for six seconds). This was based on what one of the Tunze reps on here recommended doing.

As for three pumps being better than two, not sure. I get pretty terrific flow, but there are some lower flow spots - that is a good thing though, not all corals want the highest flow. With three pumps you'll be able to arrange better configurations, but you'll have three powerheads to maintain and clean, and add visual distraction to your tank (extra pump and wire) over the two pump configuration. I eventually want a tank with a wavebox... but that will have to wait for my next project, which isn't going to happen anytime soon.

amazing pics as always Jordan. You should be taking pictures for a magazine.

Thanks Darryl, would love to have a picture published eventually. For the time being though, it is a second hobby that I'm enjoying considerably.

great read. tagging along. :)

yup, love this thread just to see new picks every so often..
Awesome tank!

Great thread. I like to see over time photos of tanks to see their growth. Keep it up man.

Thanks guys. I'm going to try and post a few more pics this upcoming weekend, hopefully some top downs.

You and sahin are KILLING ME!!!

Soooo many options. I have rebuilt my T5/LED and now it is 34 3w RB LED (no lenses), 4 T5

i am running:

Blue +
LED
Aquablue Special
Coral +
LED
Coral +

I attempted to mimic what you were doing based on your success J. I am ramping up to a photoperiod of 10 HR LED 5 HR T5. Right now running at LED 8, T5 for 4. The addition onf the Aquablue sp is alot of white!

I will post results of this new setup once i get a feel for how it is working.

also curious..... with the bulb changes what is your goal for final photoperiods for each string of lights?

I have been wondering if the timing between when the blues come on and then the whites has anything to do with the growth or color of the corals. Just thoughts: is there a sweet spot for timing the transition from RB on- T5 outer bulbs on - T5 inner bulbs on - T5 inner off - T5 outer off - RB off.

Kind of a poor mans dimming cycle. I would appreciate any thoughts you might have on this. (or is this just over-thinking)

That sounds like pretty good timing to me. I run 12 hour LEDS, 5 hour T5s. Your combo is pretty much the same as mine right now - I find it is really blue still though, even with the whiter bulbs. I was running 2 x 250 watt MHs previously though at 12k. I like the lower k colour bulbs for the midday effect though, probably more than most.

I'm not sure that would have any significant effect on growth or colour - might be more pleasing to the eye though to see all those transitions. I've thought of doing something similar, but haven't bothered.

Likefish: your combo of T5/LED is very good.

I would keep it that way; replace the ABS with a C+ or Purple+ if you want less yellow/white look.

Since you are not running any lenses; running the LED's 10 hours is fine as long as you have nutrients under control.

Apologies to Jroovers for taking his thread off topic. :fun5:

Nice tank/corals/pictures! Like you said, Canadian tanks kick *** ! :-D (most likely because we have nothing better to do in the winter LOL).

As I am not a RC frequenter this is my first time stumbling across this thread. As fate would have it I am in the process of moving my 75 to a 120. The 75 is lit exclusively by LED and I have purchased all the necessary items to retro in 4 t5 over the 120. So the plan is to leave the full spectrum DIY LED that I have hanging over the middle and put 2 t5 on each side. I went with 2 coral+ and 2 blue+ since my LED incorporates its own whites as well as red, green, blue, and TV. I hope to achieve something as spectacular as you have running here.

Waiting for the VIDEO!

Great thread! I love how you stacked the rock and placed the corals. The photography is pretty sweet too. Thanks for sharing

I agree with darryl you should be taking pictures for magazine!

Ha ha, I wish, thanks for the compliment... how is your system coming along?

On topic in my opinion... I would agree, pretty good combo. I'm hoping to swap out my T5 bulbs starting this weekend, assuming they are in stock.

That is probably a safe assumption! Glad to see you posted some pics in this forum, they are top shelf.

Sounds like you will have quite the coverage in terms of colour. You can't go wrong with the 2 each of coral+ and blue+... you may want to swap out one of those for a pure actinic, depending on how white your LEDs are. Nice thing is you have lots of options.

Don't hold your breath for that video, might be a bit before I get to it!

Awesome tank

Nice tank and very nice photos.

Thanks guys. The stacked rocks are both a blessing and a curse - anyhow, I'm stuck with'em now.

Thanks for the compliments, glad you like the photos.

Andre, I use 80 degree lens on the LEDs.

These anthia photos were taken without the LEDs on. A harem of lyretails in a SPS tank looks fantastic IMO.

I love the vivid orange on those lyretail anthias. I want some lol is it recomended to keep them in even numbers or odd

Hey Franky, I don't think it matters if you keep them in odd or even numbers. I started with 1 male, 7 females, and now I'm down to 1 male, 5 females (I lost two over the almost three years I have had them, not at the same time, so I've had both even and odd numbers). I initially added 1 male, 3 females, then added another 4 females a few months later.

Depending on the size of your tank, and how many fish you already have it it, that will dictate how many you add. I'd put in at least 4 or 5 if you have a 120 or so size tank, they develop their own pecking order. If you put in all females, the most dominant one will turn male and lead the harem. They are awesome fish, I don't think I'll ever keep a reef tank without some anthias.

I've always loved a group of Anthias in a reef tank. They give such a nice fluid pattern of movement in and static sps tank.
Bartlett's Anthias are another very hardy species..
I have found that the males that come from the ocean seem to have better coloration than females that develope into males in a tank.
Alway enjoy your shots! .. And your tank!

amazing pictures :)

do you use photoshop to darken the background ? or is it setting on camera ?

you should hold a local "Reef photography" class, Id be your first customer :)
