My 540G Inwall Display Build Thread

:uzi: UW :lolspin: Sark is gonna do big things up there, Unfortunately for me :(

Should be interesting this year, a lot of "really good" teams in the Pac, but no "elite" teams, particulaly with Oregon having a majority of their team in jail!

Zona, USC, UCLA, Cal, Oregon, Stanford, and UW should all be quite good. Thankfully everyone still has a freebe against WSU.

Sorry, am I off topic....Tank still looks great.

Ok, I have made some progress on the drywall on the living room side and have completed the plumbing under the tank and going outside. The plumbing was very time consuming.
Drywall $100
Plumbing (so far) $400

Hi Ryan,

I am very new to this site and have really enjoyed reading through your entire thread. I commend you on your patience and detail.

I know that someone mentioned this in a earlier post, and I hate to bring it up again... However, I am 99.9% sure that your drywall is hung backwards (inside out). I spent two summers in high school hanging sheet rock, and I just hung 30 sheets of the same moisture-resistant board in my new fish room. The blue side is the finish side. The other way to tell is the tape that runs along the short edges always faces the backside on every type of drywall that I have ever used.

Sorry if you are already aware of this.

Best of luck on the rest of the project.

Hoping not to be bashed too hard as the "new guy",
Dan

This is a bash free zone so your safe :) Thanks for pointing out that the drywall is on backwards. The reason I did that is normally when you hang this high humidity drywall in the bathroom your humidity area is in the room and not inside the wall. Well in my case the humidity is inside the wall so I thought the drywall should be turned around. I was told by one drywall guy that tape and texture will not stick to the "wrong" or back side of the drywall. Another guy said it would be fine. What do you think?

Great build thread...Love the natural sunlight...And...STANFORD will win the Pac-10 this year...Andrew Luck will go in the 1st round next year.

While I agree that Luck is a great QB with the loss of Gerhart someone will really need to fill that huge hole or too much pressure will be on Luck to throw the ball like he did last year. Stanford needs more than Luck (pun intended) to win the Pac-10. IMO

Tagged! When this is done you should have your local reef club over to burn insence, candles, ring chimes, chant and salaam to the reef tank gods.Make em wear snorkles and shoulder lenght neoprene gloves and dance around in circles to the sound of waves crashing and wale song. Open the blinds too so your neighbor can see. Oh Nooo!

Thanks for going easy on me. I see your point about placing the finish side towards the moisture source. I have never tried finishing the back side of drywall, but I think the plaster/compound would stick to it. My bigger concern is painting the exposed paper side. My fear is that the moisture from the paint would cause the paper to blister/wrinkle (like wet cardboard). If I were going to attempt this I would probably use fibermesh seam tape on all joints, and skim coat the entire surface with a rapid set compound (bag mix).

Good luck with everything - I'm looking forward to seeing how the project turns out.

Dan

PS - Go Badger's

^^ He's right. You're going to probably have to "treat" the exposed backsides of the drywall with a moisture sealant.. Then skimcoat the entire thing with a fast setting compound.. Then you can texture/paint..

Otherwise it will just bubble/wrinkle when you go to paint it.

I assume 2 1/4" layers of drywall was too thick?

1 facing in.. The other facing out?

you probably had 3/8 on the wall..

But just a thought

It sounds like the smarter move will be to take the drywall down and flip it around. I will probably go that route. Thanks for saving me a huge headache!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Before you put the drywall back on, staple up some vapor barrier. That will be MORE than adequate to prevent the moisture from affecting the back side of the drywall that will now be facing the high humidity of the tank.

A vapor barrier like? A sheet of plastic? I was thinking I would paint it all do the sheet plastic and then put FRP up over the plastic. Any better ideas?

i think the plastic will be good - frp might be overkill - how do you plan to get rid of the moisture in that cavity? drywall will allow some to pass through into the living space - the plastic will not.

Whoops, guess you wouldn't normally know what vapour barrier is over there. Up here in Canada we use "vapour barrier" in the walls to isolate the moist air from inside from going into the insulation in the outer walls and condensing.

It's basically just a big sheet of thick poly plastic. You'd just staple it onto the studs before re-attaching the drywall.

Great build so far. As a HOA survivor my heart sank as I read about your neighbor. You have dealt with him admirably, hearing your story gave me PTSD.

One question, what about access under the tank? I thought you were going to do that from the living room side? I guess you are putting doors on the bedroom side then?

P.S. I am also the unhappy recipient of 5 knee surgeries on the same knee. Hang in there man, I'm pulling for ya.

i kinda like the idea of 2 1/4 inch layers of sheetrock...one out and one in....that way it can all be taped floated and painted w/ no moisture worries

I have bee s l o w l y working on things. I got the final extensions put on the solar tubes and it helped a lot. I'm not going to extend the part on the roof up just yet. I will wait for water and a pear meter to see if I have to do that. Here are some pictures as of 4pm yesterday.

Here you can see the tubes insides. It may look like 3 but the 4th one is hiding a bit back there, up a touch higher than the others.
