My 540G Inwall Display Build Thread

Have you thought about lining the curtain with black or blue material so it looks more like a typical background from the living room side when it's closed? They make a dyable cloth that blocks light called drapery blackout cloth. I have used it to make projector screens. It's heavy weight and very pliable.

What is the air exchange plan for the equipment room?

Right now the plan is to keep the shed closed up in the summer and winter and just run the AC or heater(I doubt I will need this). In the sping and fall I plan on leaving the door open when the tempeture is nice. I cant do an air exchanger as its 110+ for 3 months a year here, and 3-4 more months of 100+. I may add an evap cooler to extend the time I can leave the door open. I may also add a window to leave open instead of the door. I'm going to just see what happen the first year and adjust accordingly.

The white material you see is the "blackout" material. I just got it in white. I could dye it in the future but I doubt I will, I like how it looks for now.

Out in the shed I got the sink all hooked, RO unit hung and my saltwater container in the shed.

Ok, now I am REALLY REALLY self conscious about my skimmer. Yours is quite impressive, as far as poop removal goes.

Nice work!!!!!

So, I have just spent the past hour reading this entire thread...best hour I have spent all week, I must say!!

Don't know what else can be said that hasn't already...truly a massive effort and great results so far. I am really into this idea of using solar tubes in lieu of powered lighting. Aside from the obvious savings in costs, it just looks so much more natural and effective. I am also blown away with your plumbing...I tried to look closely, but couldn't see any form of guide markings on that mess of spaghetti you buried...how did you know which pipes to connect to where after the dirt went back in??

Lot's of very useful tips and tricks in this thread. Bookmarked for furture idea stealing...I mean reference! :)

Oh, yeah...that skimmer is just mad!!

Ever consider a vertical panel curtain for the bedroom side? You could mount the LCD on the panel. See concept below (sorry for the hodge-podge insertion of the LCD, but you get the idea). I think that there are some ball bearing slides that you could use to mount the ends of the panel with counter weights on the other side of the wall or, you could automate it with a motor system.

The panel could be lowered or raised to provide the privacy that you seek. Could also cover it in rockwork paneling similar to the stuff you did below the tank in the living room.

Thanks again for everyone’s comments, they keep me motivated to make progress! As far as the plumbing goes I did number the pipes 1-8to remember which ones they were. It was a nightmare digging to put those into the ground and I could only imagine the nightmare if I had to dig them up again. :hammer: Please feel free to use any ideas I have shown here as I have stolen most of them from others on this site!

I really like this idea! Its got me thinking but to be honest with you at this point anything extra that cost more or slows me down is getting tossed aside for now. I really want to get this tank done. I will put this in the "after the tank is done" pile of things to consider.

Your aquarium is an inspiration man its absolutely beautiful. Its like when you see a Austin Martin or a Classic Muscle car it turns you into a kid again. I have a question about your closed loop. On the intake side how will you clean the drain covers if/when they get clogged? I ask because I plan on doing something similar and am worried about disturbing corals that grow on the rock around the drain. If this question has been asked and answered already please point me in the right direction.

Thanks, I reckon I'll do just that!! :)

Just been thinking a little on these solar tubes... I see you live in a warmer area of the country, much as I do here in Oz, and I am curious about heat transfer with the tubes extending so far into your house? I see you have installed ducting etc, I guess to remove humidity and heat from within the wall cavity, but without those components in place (and, say dropping the tubes down over an open-top, non-inwall tank), would there be much to be concerned with, temperature wise? Could one expect higher temps than when using an MH array, for example?

Cheers.

Your tank is amazing, and your skimmer is huge. Makes my 90 gallon look like 90 milliliters. I just got a Octopus 800 skimmer and its like 1/10 the size. You are the man, waiting til I can do what you are doing. Keep it up

Awesome tank! I love these well documented large tank builds. I am in the works of a 450g system as well. Keep up the great work!

Got the TV up. 32" Sharp LED.
