My Black Ocellaris pair are spawning!!!

There's an old saying in aquaculture, "How do make a million dollars? Start with 2 million" :D

You got that right Bill.

Here's my update.. I have probably 75-100 survivors from the last hatch that are nearing meta. I see a touch of a headband on a couple. My Rots held out. Actually this morning had to thin them out of the larvae tank so the fish had room to swim :) Man the population just exploded. It seems some stress then near perfect conditions may trigger some kind of self preservation in the Rots. I've never had to do that before. Also my cultures are coming back very well it seems. The one wasn't really doing anything. The Phyto I added 2 days ago wasn't disappearing. It actually was getting greener. (I had put a heater in this culture as well to speed reproduction) I put a gallon of water from the other cultures in it and when I thinned the rots from the larvae tank I put them in it. I came home tonight to a very dense culture. Its amazing how fast they are multiplying. My fish laid another nest tonight too. The timing is way off this time. They laid 2 days early and it was about 7:15pm. I'm running out of tanks again ugh... I can't wait for that conversation with the wife...

All I can think of is they were very stressed. Almost crashed completely. Then when I put them in the larvae tank to co culture with some phyto / heat / air in near perfect water they went nuts. In the culture that wasn't coming back I added a heater and some of the fast reproducing rots from the larvae tank. Heating the culture and getting the Rots reproducing really fast is risky though. The water will go south very quick now. I lowered the salinity in my cultures as well to 1.014. They reproduce better in the lower salinity.

Did putting the tile upside down cause any problems with your hatch last time? I was thinking of doing the same since they also lay eggs on the very top of the tile for me and I didn't want to fill the tank all the way up to the top if I didn't have to.

No I don't think it matters up or down.. I've had incomplete hatches the last 2 times I believe because of improper aeration. My airstone is plugging up and the bubbles aren't uniform. I'll have a new one for this hatch.

What salinity are you keeping your fry? I thought that if there is more than a .007 difference in salinity between the rots and the fry, the rotifers will go into shock and die. I try and keep my rots close to the same salinity as the fry.

My fry tanks are typically at 1.020 after they pass meta. Your right no more than .007. I'm going to start growing out at 1.010 to save the salt.

well there are heavy weight professional breeders that does it at 1.010, but they also have pretty large operations in comparison. Most of the smaller to medium sized breeders tend to use 1.018.

Ok. Maybe I'll stick with 1.018 at least until I get a ph controller setup. Here's a pic of my latest nest of about 550.

Thanks all. I did a water change on the last batch's tank yesterday with fresh sw. (sieving out rots to start to minimize the population in the tank as they get older) This morning I put a sponge filter in and tonight all the Rots are gone. Don't some people (FB?) put sponge filters in the Rot culture? I am thinking the sponge filter sucked in all the Rots. Unless me thinning them yesterday let the fish catch up to and overcome the population. They are huge eaters after meta.

Make sure to gut load those babies that are close to saleable size with cyclop-eeze or something similar to boost their color. You can actually get more from most retailers by doing this and they sell faster which equals faster return on investment and more room in the growout. :D

I did not get through the whole thread, but I noticed you asked about proper timing to change food sizes. The best guage is the biggest fry in the tank. If he can eat it, give it too them. The faster you ramp up food size the faster they will grow. Also as a side note to what I wrote above, to save time and money feed foods that produce growth and don't worry about color until they are about a month from saleable.
