My favorite piece of equipment

We lost power yesterday for 10 hours. Thank goodness we have a generator. We bought it several years ago and never needed it until yesterday. Well worth the investment. I was able to run all the equipment for the tanks and fans to help keep them cool.

I may buy a small window AC unit in case this happens again.

I know what you mean. I just got power back, over 24 hours without it. Luckily my neighbors across the street had power and I ran 2 100 foot extention cords to their house. I was able to power my whole tank as well. I took a trip up to home depot to look at generators and the cheapest one was $500! I can definately see buying one in the future just as a fail safe though. Glad you had your generator on hand.

We ran a garden hose from our outdoor spicket to the neighbors next door when their pump went out. So running a cord was pretty thoughtful of your neighbor. Was he aware that you had a complete sw set-up to run on his meter? And did he send you the next month's bill?lol. aren't you glad that they were not on vacation and the lights came on with the timer when you knocked on the door. (that's my kind of luck). Generators are a good thing.

next up ( favorite) is to have a battery powered air pump - one that starts automatically if the power quits. I lost all my fish after a breaker tripped when I was out of town last week. Had a fellow reefer looking in daily- but by the time he stopped in the damage was complete. So, I will be purchasing one of these ASAP. Anybody use these before- model/brand would be helpful.

I lost my whole tank to a power outage last year or the year before. 3 day power outage, the tank went about 10 hours between the time it lost power in the night and the time I got up and bought a generator.

Also you can find them under $500 you need to look at places like Murry's discount auto store and Tracktor Supply ect... I think I paid $350 for mine maybe?

I have been lurking on craigslist looking for a deal on a generator.
Not only does the SW setup require power heat, hot water and freezer need to run also.

What about in an apartment building with no balcony? Any way to run a generator out the window or some thing like that so we dont all asphyxiate?

Does anyone know where to buy one of these?

If you want to make the trip, Hutch pet store in kent had a few. I am not sure of the brand you could give them a call 330-673-4896. I need to get me a few of those fo my tanks as well.

know an electrician?

know an electrician?

I lost power from 6:40 pm to 3:10 am last week. I'd like to buy a generator and have it direct connected to the house/breaker box so I don't lose coral/fish. Anyone know an electrician that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to recommend and install a generator?

I have posted one for sale every year when we have power issues like summer and winter. I dont have a big tank now and dont use it anymore. but you see the same story every time people talk that it is so urgent to get one after someone looses a tank. then they dont because they cost money THEN when they loose power they regret SO much that they never got a generator. and they lost tons of money because they didnt buy a generator. you would think some folks would learn If you are spending that much money on your tank 400 bucks is cheap insurance to keep it alive.. that should be a mandatory part of a reef setup..
Oh PS mine is not for sale on here so this wasnt a plug to sell mine.

got our generator at harber freight tools last year after my sister's power was out for almost a week. great investment. It took care of the 100g, 120g, 125g and 300g with no problem.
I wanted to thank chuggy again for calling me back when I couldn't get the darn thing started. All fish recovered but one. He's still looking pretty bad but hanging in there.

Craigslist lurking finally paid off we bought an older 3500 watt 8hp Generac for $60.With some fresh fuel new points and the carb cleaned we should have a nice backup generator.
