Hi Willan

Well, i don't have a pure Zeo-system. I use a hybrid system and the DSB (deep sand bed) is one of the most important parameter to reduce nutrients in this method.

Stunning Pics Iwan - impressive composition - what equipment do you use?

The Red Sea still has away to go to be as colorful as your reef:lol:

@ all Red Sea-questioners:

I have used my Sony "DSC-P10" camera for the photos. This is the identical camera which I also use for the photos of my tank. Of course I need a sub-water case for the diving pictures.

I have dived at the reefs of the south Sinai around Sharm el Sheikh.
The region has three main areas:
- Ras Mohamed
- Tiran
- Local

There are various diving places in every main area.

The condition of the reefs is different. The places in this Ras Mohamed national park are intact.
The most of the reefs in Tiran are also healthy. The local spots are partly damaged a little.

great pics! Where did you stay? Did you go to the tip? How is the health of the reefs?

Wow...what a find! Do you have an ID on this?

surprise....surprise :D

Do you know the tank on the cover of "reefkeeping" volume 5 2006? http://reefkeeping.com/index.htm

Thanks Ron.

You know your reef could be on the cover every month!!

Snuck one in from the med huh?:D

iwan, I do have a serious question: I am not happy with the lighting over my remote DSB/refugium and have been contemplating going to T-5 lamps. I am not getting good macro growth, but the pods are doing well since I collected a bunch locally. This DSB/refugium gravity feeds into my display tank and has a powerhead to keep things moving a bit.

Can you make a recommendation for a lamp/reflector/ballast combination? The tub is 30 inches x 48 inches and there is only about 7 inches of water above the sand.

I am particularly interested in any advice you can give about ballast/lamp compatibility and lamp color temp. you would choose.

Thanks for any help!! I am really glad to see pictures from the Sinai. Going there is a real safari and the rewards are great! :D

Quick Reference Guide

Quick Reference Guide

Stunning photos again Iwan:D

Just makes me realise how much more I can aim for;)

I'v attached a quick 'reference guide' to the components taking info from various sources. I'd be greatful if you could have a look and make any suggestions - particulalry arround coloration effect and dosages.

There are a few of us now who have achieved the low nutrient phase, and the color modeling is the greater challenge - so any help would be great.

Many thanks

Simon

Hi Iwan

First I must say you have a beautifull tank and to be congratulated on your accomplishment.

I have a few questions ...

firstly your reference to the finest sand ... are you referring to particle size as in what is commonly referred to as " sugar sand " ? ... a friend had fine sand but he said the pumps blew it all over the tank.

Is this sand you are using aragonite sand ? ... silica sand ? ... can either be used ?

When feeding the tank do you shut off the skimmers ? ... if so for how long ?

Thanks

bump ;)

Just a question from a newbie. Will the low nutrient levels affect other corals in the tank? for example..zoas?

Iwan,

You have a lot of fish and 0 nutrients..... what do you feed your tank ? how often you do it ? how much do you feed ?

I don't have a doubt that all the products you are adding to your tank are helping to keep your nutrients very low, but in no part of this thread I have seen a reference to feeding.

Thanks for your answer.

Hi Simon,

good idea with the quick guide.
I use the most additions with more or less the same dosage.

I dose following products in a other way:

KB: I dosed it at the begin daily and now weekly (1ml/100l)
Iron: I dose it 1x per month
PIF: I dose it 1x per month

Cheers

Iwan

Yes...but on a positive way. Every coral has a benefit from a natural nutrient level. But keep in mind: It is important to deliver energy for growing and transforming color. Energy means coral food ( amino acids, plancton, special coral food...)

I feed 2-3x per day (artemia, mysis, krill, cyclop eeze)
I feed 2x3 pieces from a blister package and 1 tsp cyclop eeze

Hi Iwan,
Congrats , your tank is very beautiful , I hope to attain that level eventually one day.
My question to you is, what would be the protocol when starting a new tank with DSB and LR in regards to probidio products?
Thanks

Hi,

Simon wrote a good guide. The first and the second point are important at the beginning of the method (Nutrient reduction and Coral Feeding). The 3th point (Coloring) is for the advanced user. First the water parameter should be in the optimal range. After that the improving of coloring is recommended. You have to be comfortable with the effects of the reduction of nutrients and coral-feeding, before you'll try to modelling the colors.
