I saw that nem when I was in there earlier in the week. The color on that thing is amazing. Got yourself a nice looking BTA.

Its a way to support the local stores. Each store sells the cards and you pay a onetime $20 fee which gets you the card. I am not sure if it is a yearly fee or not, but I saved the $20 when I purchased other items at SW Aquaculture (this is where I purchased my card about 3 weeks ago). The card can be used at any of the local stores participating (which is most of them). Each store will have specials for those who purchased the card. The other day when I was at Club Reef, he told me the price of the Anemone and he was selling at $100. I asked if they were having any specials for Arizona Marine Society Card holders and he said yes, they were offering 25% off any one item in the store. I immediately said I will take it and paid only $75 for it. It was such an amazing deal, I ended up spending an additional $75 on other items to further support the local stores.

Welcome to the Arizona Marine Society page.
Our page was created for the locals by the locals with the express purpose of bringing our community together. We will not be adding out of state vendors or any other business that does not have a store front. We want to focus on the local stores that help us out on a sometimes daily basis with the knowledge and advice they impart to us as well as the awesome stuff they bring to us regularly. Most of us got our start at one or more of the local stores over the years and our goal is to return the support they have shown us over the years. We have worked with some of the local stores and teamed up exclusively to offer a Store Appreciation Card that will be available to purchase from the club. This card will offer special discounts and offers from the stores on a monthly basis and will be good at all participating stores for every month. Not just one store on one month.
We also plan to have club meetings eventually to help bring our reefing and saltwater community together. The money made from the Store Appreciation Card will be re invested back into the community by way of purchase of equipment that will be available for rental ( PAR meter, fish trap etc..). We also plan to use most of the money to re invest into the stores by purchasing larger colonies of nicer corals and cutting them up so more people have a chance to own choice pieces. All club members are encouraged to offer up ideas on what corals they would like to see purchased.
All of the frags will be sold and none will be retained by the club. Then the money will be re invested into more corals again and so on. None of this money goes to any club member as this is not for our profit but intended to enrich our community. We also want to encourage all member to donate to the Emergency Equipment Collection to help other reefers in need.

So they're trying to help the local stores by making them give card holders a discount each month? doesn't that cut into their profit margins? how does that benefit the stores? and the extra money raised go towards purchasing more coral to be fragged and distributed to all of the garage reefers who will turn around and make a profit from it? how does that benefit the stores?

They are working on adding tropical treasures.
Each store will do discount on a weekly or monthly basis for card holders, usually the card pays itself off with first purchase. I was supposed to get mine this weekend and things came up so I will be going to Chris or Carlos this week to get mine.
Saint: $5 of the $20 goes to the store. The other $15 goes towards purchasing loaner equipment, PAR meter I think is on the list as well as fish traps, chemicals and other hardware people can borrow and use.
The store's incentive is to be part of the program and get more business from AMS members, the $5 helps a tiny bit but it is mostly the increase in business and the knowledge of supporting a local marine group and this hobby in general. If it didnt help them I doubt so many stores would be so willing to help us out, they have been offering some great deals for members.

No problem and thanks for the compliment. I think it is good to talk about ways to help the LFS's. You can look at the computer all day and check out corals, fish etc.. but nothing beats walking into a store and seeing in person.

I agree, I have done so much window shopping online but when it comes down to it it is what I can find local 90% of the time that I end up going with.

They offer to be part of the store list that is supporting the group, and they come up with their discount programs each month/week. They arent doing anything they dont want to to drive more people to their stores. Heck I think Chris was even waiving the $5 part his store got last week, and from the sounds of it he got a decent increase in business due to the card last week, isnt that enough?

Here is how it works ... The card is $20 . The store donates $5 back to the AMS so once a year we hold a card holders (only ) BBQ party and all store owners and card holders are invited to come. There will also be meetings throughout the year. The other $15 the store keeps and the club goes to the store to use the credit to buy a coral at full retail ( no discount ) and cuts it up sells them at a club special price. Example $150 coral 10 frags $17.50 each to club card holders only and all purchased corals are sold in the store they were purchased from and the money stays in the store for future coral purchases .. Then when they are gone they are gone and it's done again. We hope the the the savings in store would entice people to continue to support the stores on a regular basis..
It's a common business practice. The business actually takes a bit of a loss on something they sell, which gets people in the door. The hope is that while you're there, you'll also buy stuff that there is a profit margin on.
My favorite LFS sells salt at a loss. I never buy just salt
