my rice experiment

I will try that when I get home. Bare in mind that when cleaning the cup I have the skimmer just flowing through...i don't have to turn it off. So there has been plenty of time for bacteria to enter the tank.

today there was a lot LESS skimmate built up. Normally up to now I'd have 3 to 4 times as much...this afternoon it was just a tiny bit.

as far as glass and algae on rocks..no change.

same problem I had with BP. Could be that my skimmer was just removing the fats and stuff from the rice...and now the rice is inert...just like the BP were. Apparently I have a strange tank.

yes the skimmer gets a little less crazy after a few days.
are you skimming dry or wet?
initially I had to skim real dry (but it would still put out about cups a day), then I slowly started closing the valve so that it skimms wetter.
maybe ur skimmer is just too powerful.....lol
y dont u increase the amount of rice?
i use 1 and 1/2 cups in my 100g approx system, so increasing upto that should be relatively safe

Bad news today Aurora had power outrage lost most all of his fish coral doing fine. His rice had a melt down. He had it runnung near a two months. I still have to keep it pending on how long does the rice last.

how long was it out...i can't believe he lost a lot of fish from a simple power outage. Mine lasted a week once and I only lost two fish.

colt, a few things. first I think u meant po4 not no3 cuz lanthanum chloride gets rid of po4 by binding to it and being skimmed out.
did u get a bacterial bloom even a slight one?
for some reason I think its important to get a bloom with rice......maybe like highlandreefer said, the bloom is not a good thing, but it might be opposite for rice.

dont worry about ur no3 levels if they are up to 2 or 5, its not a major concern, and I'm sure that within a few days it will drop again.

please let us know how ur NPS corals reacts, as ur the first one with an Nps tank trying the rice.

From COLT:

- I have been running the Rice Train for a week, all the NPS are fine, I have found some new tubastreas (asexual reproduction) and they are not opened yet, but I think this is normal.
- My Rice changed color, I will post pics later
- My skimmer is with less skimming (weird)

Next steps:
- wash and rinse the Rice with high pressure water
- soak the rice with RO / DI water with activated carbon and phosguard in order to abosrb PO4, SI and metals for 24 hrs (I will post pics later)

What do you think about it?

before the train of rice, I used a combination of 200 ml of vodka, a tablespoon of sugar and 2 vials of bioptim of prodibio, achieved in only a slight chance the bacterial bloom.

When I started the rice in the reactor, the water was slightly cloudy, but I can not say whether it was rice or the lanthanum.
I want to restart the method at the beginning of the third week

There are lot of variables. If your system has a high demand for oxygen then they can die real quick. I lost about 10 fish in one day when the power flickered and the inline GFI popped (not sure why but always does that and I forgot to tell the guy babysitting my tank to check it). Lots of dead fish/snails/etc. obviously nitrates are through the roof in that tank even after a couple large water changes. Thinking it might be a good expirement for the rice method nitrates are through the roof and it is just a 120g I have for unwanted corals and fish anyway.

yeah, I read that he had a lot of tangs, that's terrible...i hate when people lose fish that were "old" to them and that they were attached to. I hate it. Hope he gets it all cleaned up and running again soo.

day 5 over...

no3 still around 15 to 20...so either no change...or it's gone up a tad.

have the skimmer off for a few hours...gonna see if that makes any difference. :/

I'm gonna wait a week at least before adding any more rice. And I had to readjust the skimmer to get a little more out of it now that it's skimming less.

all fish, corals, inverts are fine, with no distress. Rice has been a little yellower/brownish since day 2, so I think that's normal.

so just stay tuned. And everyone stop having power failures...man whos next? (did I just jinx us)

Aurora: sorry for your loss...I truly feel for you after a loss of all your old water buddies. :*(

alright...i found my copper test...and did a mag test. All numbers after day 5:

sal 1.024
ph 8.05 (taken after lights out)
alk 9°dkh
ca 400ppm
mag 1250ppm
no3 15-20ppm
po4 0ppm
copper NONE! (the test didn't even think about coloring up) :D

so that's it for me after 5 days. :)

Quick update

Quick update

Day 13
Today is water change day, I don't usually bother to test my water until it has settled down for a day. I also cleaned my orp probe and it's still reading higher than it should. Swapped out my skimmer today for another with a higher capacity. Went from a Tunze 9005 to a Tunze 9010. My old skimmer was pulling 100ml of nog each day I am anxious to see what this one pulls as it has a more powerful pump. When I was in my sump I noticed that what little macro algae I have left is dieing off, going to prune some more out tomorrow. All livestock appears normal one thing I am noticing is that corals that are on frag racks under the most light are looking phenomenal the ones mounted to my rock work look kinda plain jane. Not sure if my water is not as clear as it was or if it's because of the lowered nutrients.

due to techical issues my sump is offline, but I should have it back up tomorrow and I post up some numbers tomorrow with a few interesting pics
:)

day 6 for me...
I had to run into work early...so no testing during the day. But last night I did have to clean up my chiller pump. So as it turns out my temps may have been a little higher than I thought. But I don't think it should be a problem. I also got the skimmer dialed in a little better to compensate for the lack of skimate the day before. Today it's a little wetter so the foam is going up and out again. I hope for some DIFFERENT numbers for a change. Almost one week with no change in my parameters. We'll see...

A bit of a vinegar rinse is fine, although I don't think it'll do anything that a good rinsing with tap water won't do. What are you trying to remove?

Update

Day 14
It's been two weeks since I brought my rice reactor online. The rice is still holding up and I have not noticed anymore small pieces in the reactor other than the few I have had since the beginning. It is a nice funky shade of brown however. My levels
Sg 1.026
Orp 288
Ph 8.3
NH3 0
NO2 0
NO3 0 undetectible
PO4 0 undetectible
SiO2 .25
Dkh 9
Mg2 1440
Ca2 440-460
O2 8 ppm
Not much to report today. All livestock looks great also getting nice polyp extension today and tonight. I had been pulling 100 ml of skimmate the past few days but I need to tune in the new skimmer. This new skimmer is a beast when I dosed this weeks essential elements supplement I believe it pulled all of it out in a half hour as it pulled light blue skimmate. I have never seen that happen before with my old one and I hope I did not get too carried away with the size of this skimmer. :blown:

Does anybody else using bio pellets or trying rice monitor their orp? I would to know how your orp levels were effected by the carbon dosing.

day 6....nothing. Not a single change. Skimmer is working better now that it's re-tuned. Otherwise everything is fine.

Good job guys. Beacause of all of you I have jumped on the wagon. Being an ex BioPellet user so far so good. The bio pellets never worked for me for a second, so far the rice looks promising. I am not going to go into details as I dont want to get my hopes up, but thing are definitely different this time around.

Anyways keep us updated, and thanks
