My s.mertensii

I don't understand why they aren't around more often either. It seems very easy. Or, did I get lucky? Are they normally hard? I thought they were easy, but I've only tried this one.

From the people I've talked to, that have kept mertensii, they say they're rather hardy. For a host anemone that is.

Thanks EC! I kind of figured they were on the easy side once acclimated. Shipping must be hard with them.

Here's a blurry picture of the 2 mouths. The main one is easy to see. Mouth #2 is around 2 oclock from the main mouth in the picture.

I doubt it will ever split. It came this way.

Color

Color

Taylor,
Mertens is my favorite anemone, when i say drab i mean compared to blue and red haddoni. The average reefer would rather have the haddoni.

Yours is the exact same colors as mine was, its one of the most striking anemones and how they move with the flow is part of that and the bioluminesce under acticinics.

Congrats and good luck. Hopefully someone bring some in.

IME, not only are they quite hardy (I kept mine under 4-40watt NO fluorescents for a long time) they also seem to ship very well (of the ~10 I have seen at wholesalers, I have yet to see one in bad shape). When I got my first 2, the wholesale price was $24. :) That was before people started looking for them and wanting them.
I think the biggest reason you don't see them often is that they grow quite fast in nature and finding one less than 2 feet across is difficult. It also might be difficult to get them off the rocks because they like to bury their foot in a crevice like a BTA.
I bought a silver dollar sized one from Blue Zoo about a year ago for $40. They had 3 of them for quite a while before they were able to sell them. They are popular on this web site but in the general population of salt water hobbyists, I don't imagine they sell very well compared to colored haddoni.

I have also heard that they are much less frequently seen in the wild than S. haddoni, or for that matter, S. gigantea. They are also typically deeper water anemones than either of those other two species, which probably also limits their collect-ability.

A couple more pics from tonight.

nice nem David, I have seen this in real life and the nem is huge and it occupies a quarter top quadrant of the tank, you are truly mr anemone David, hands down,we are not worthy lol!

the tank is looking great David, cant wait to see your gigs in that tank,it will truly be a nem tank. Did you just do a water change? I cant wait to see it in person this week,B E A U T I F U L,very nice David.

Watch out

Watch out

Be careful with mixing gigs and magnificas and mertens.

My mertens didnt do good till i took out my magnifica. Mertens and giganteas and mags are in my expirience are the worst for chemical warefare and they also are the strongest sting and clearing out corals.

my mertens did find with bubbletips. But be careful mixing them with the other too.

I wish i knew where all the mertens came from last year, they all looks the same. Mine is same coloring as yours.

No gigs going in that tank. Gigs get their own dedicated system. It's a work in progress.

I was wrong. It was a purple gig that started under MH and switched to LED. Lost after this guy was added. This one has been under LED and T5 the whole time. I found a picture of when I first got it. The date in the "properties" of the picture I found said 6-4-10, and then one a week later. So I've had it 1 year and 5 months. Seems longer to me, but it isn't. I was a bit disappointed when I first got it, it looked like a bleached out haddoni with spots. Tents looked like little bumps like haddoni too. Took some time, but now is by far my favorite.

Here is first in tank. 6-4-10

A week later.

Maybe about 6-8" when I got it. 1.5 years to almost triple. Yikes!

Taylor, you mertens is gorgeous. I think they dont look that good till they get bigger.

Alot of people dont import them because they dont look good. Anyone who wants an anemone looks for crazy greens, blues reds.

If you get a chance can you take some pics of the base so people can see how unique it looks.

This is a pic i had reefhot spot take for me when they were selling them. I wanted to verify mertens.

Sorry so late... Thanks guys!!!

Since last post, mertens walked into MP40, got chewed up, and killed all fish with the exception of the 3 clowns. They were panting heavy, but lived. Corals were fine. Took quite some time for things to calm down, but decided to keep fish levels very low from here on out. Mertens healed like no problem.

Updated pics from today.

Main mouth at center. Second mouth fully functional at 2 o'clock from main mouth. Both eat, and have the insides come out to eat. It has turned into a larger mouth over the last couple years. It was a tiny slit when I first got it.

Thanks Minh. Only one other anemone, sebae. I removed the others.
This guy is the only other anemone in the system. I think I had the sebae first, and they have been together most of the time. There is a good foot between them.

this mertens is nothing short of majestic in person....
if I were an anemone I'd want to leave in Dave's tank ;)
