My Tank update pictures

That's very impressive. Everything just looks amazing in your setup. Do you ever frag your corals? Also what type of Angelfish do you have in there? I thought they weren't reef safe.

I normally only frag my corals when someone wants a piece, I don't keep a frag tank, this past frag swap I actually frag about 60 pieces they all sold at the show. I keep just about all angelfish, I believe that there are far less Non reef safe than advertise, In my observation, most angels and even butterflies will only attack and eat corals that are stating to die already. Also, my fish do pick on the corals on occasion but then they move into another coral, in the most part they don't hurt the coral.

Thanks for the pic updates Rogger. Your tank looks amazing, couple of questions.

1st is I read that your tank exploded. How did that happen? (if you don't mind me asking)
2nd all your acros have nice polyp extensions and I can't never seem to have that...

All of my water parameters are checking out fine but I think I might not have enough lights for them.. what are your thoughts?

One of the large glass panels came off due to some defective silicone, it was devastating at the time but I rebuild after that incident to this.
you can read all about it here http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1529578

To be honest, I am not sure what makes polyp extension on corals during the day, it is an enigma to me, I use to not have this much polyp extension it never really bothered me because at night after a couple of hours of the lights been off the polyp extension was massive, this is the time that I will feed the corals.
I have been observing this extension for a few months now, but I haven't really changed anything, it is possible that as the tank ages maybe it gets better. At least that is my case ;)

Holy crap... I'm sorry that you had to go through that.. Honestly I think that's every tanker's nightmare.... I read up to page 4 and got the jist of everything... whew..

On the topic of polyp extension, mine rarely comes out at all. I see very slow growth on them and they are keeping their color and encrusting so I think they have something there but mystery of no polyps is.... daunting.

I will try to feed my corals bit more... I rarely do actually.... too lazy lol.
I will try to observe their behavior at night time, perhaps i will see it then.

I don't wish that to no one, but I must say, if it wasn't for the support that I got from all the FMAS club members and RC subscribers I may have not gotten the courage to rebuild and bring the tank back to its glory, I can't thank them enough!
Start feeding slowly and check the corals very late, 2-3 am

Roger! umm.. Rogger. (Unintended pun here)

I will try to check around 2ish... I usually hit the sack around 1ish so I will stay up little longer one night to check. Do you have your actinic on when you feed or in complete darkness? Sorry to keep on bothering you. All of these are relatively new to me.

Rog- IMHO the fact that you have a >300 gal tank allows you the extra buffer with those fish that others of us dont get the advantage of. Other contributing factors might include your diversity of corals, frequency of your feedings etc... Who knows maybe your whispering to them at 3am helps,
 but in reality it is not the usual case.

I also have a majestic, multicolor, and flame in my tank. SPS are not touched that I can tell, but zoas are not allowed (they become "treats") and ide be skectical of fleshy LPS, ie scolys, etc...

The below thread is an ongoing post that has been keeping track of Angel Fish in reefs for a few years. Please check page 10 for the latest Excel spread sheet on the data he collected.

No Doubt that my tanks size matters but the fact that you have a majestic a multicolor and a flame on a 120gal tank contradicts the same theory.
There are lots of things that will affect the outcome when it comes to wether a fish is or is not going to eat corals, including the personality of the fish.....I have seen purple tang and hippo tangs go after hard corals and I have had 11" queen angels be perfect citizens. I often compared them to my kids, same dad same mom one loves steak the other one doesn't, go figure.
It is impossible to accurately label a fish reef safe or non reef safe all I am saying is that I have venture more than most people dare to try and have found that a lot of species that thought were not reef safe IMO could have been miss label.
I can tell you that if a coral in my tank starts to loose tissue (RTN) the angels and butterfly go downtown on them, I have also observed that once the coral has been cleaned of the dead tissue they are usually left alone and some times corals stop dying and regenerate their tissue due to this cleaning (my theory), now if this is seen by an untrained eye it will appear as if the fish went rogue on the coral and they are attacking it to eat it
It is hard to imagine that fish that normally lives in coral reefs don't have a real function in that eco system and I am 99.999% sure that it is not to eat the organism that provide shelter and safety for them, there is lots more to be learned in this subject, I do tons of observations and take notes as well, Maybe one day I will put them together in a book.
BTW that Spreadsheet is confusing as hell, :D

I showed my wife pictures of your tank yesterday and she loved them! So when are we coming over for a tank watch party? I'll bring the booze LOL! Truly inspirational. One of my favorite tanks for sure. Makes me wish I had ordered bigger ;)

Nice again and after years I do agree there's only several non- reef safe fish, the ones that naturally eat acro polyps( and even those can be trained)

Right now my reef has acros( mostly) 4 clams/some zoos.
FIsh list:
cetrophyge---ebili/nox/flame/venustus/fishers
Bandit
majestic
two genichantus
they all nip at corals that for some reason or another are not in their best shape, but completely leave alone healthy corals.

Manny- Im jealous that you can keep a Majestic with Zoas.

Last time I brought home a $60 zoa from Orlando, WWC, it became a nice snack. It lasted 15 minutes. :(
