Mysterious fish deaths are more common now (Flukes)

i did a 20% water change and the lion seems more active than yesterday

is it possible for the lion to fight this disease by itself?

i have trouble catching out the lion as the tank is well covered

Nope, there is no known immune response to this pesky parasite :(

Depending on what else is in the tank, you might be able to treat directly in the tank with Praziquantel. Sold in LFS as PraziPro.

Bill, would it not be a good idea for the poster to treat the tank with Prazipro anyways since the lionfish has flukes and is in with other fish or hosts?

My Xmas island emperor start twitching his head, losing some colors

,damage on his fins and stop eating today so I FW dipped.

I have say wow! I found about 40 flukes falling it off. He is still moving ok

with normal breath, just doesnt want to eat. Should I dose Prazi pro

immeditly? or should I wait to see how he does?

If it is the only fish in the tank then I would treat the tank and not do the fw dips---that could be stressing the lion fish out even more.

just took a pix of it
looks like it is infected with ich now
hope it can pull through

This is one of the rare instances I disagree with capn. I would do the FW dip, as it will provide considerable relief from the fluke infection in a matter of minutes, instead of the few days it would take the Prazi to do it's thing. While doing the dip will cause some stress, IME not enough to outweigh the benifits of stripping of most, if not all, of the flukes right away. For the ich, I would either treat with Cupramine or hyposalinity. Sadly it's not unusual for a new fish to come in with multiple parasites like this. It's a good reason to QT.

how often should i do FW dip?
should i dip for 10 mins straight or slowly increase the FW dip duration?

any tips on hyposalinity?

this is not a "new" fish, my friend kept for more than a year
all this happen after 2 months i took over it

sorry for being a lousy owner :sad2:

Any new fish or other life (including LR) that the lion has been exposed to in that time period, or shortly before getting it from your friend?

As for the dip, I would go with a straight FW dip. Use FW that is temp adjusted, dechlorinated, and well aerated. Dip for at least 1 minute, prefferably 5, go up to 10 if the Lionfish apears to be tolerating it very well. The most important thing is to do this with no distractions around, you need to pay attention to what your doing to avoid getting stung, as well as for monitoring the fish in the dip.

For hyposalinity, drop the salinity to 1.009 to 1.010 over a period of 2 days. You need to do this using a calibrated refractometer, conductivity meter, or lab grade hydrometer. The swing arms are not precise enough. Once you have the salinity dropped, maintain it for 4 weeks by checking daily and adding FW as needed. BTW, this is not any more invert friendly than copper, so any snails or other inverts need to be removed.

my qt tank was almost wiped out by fluke i believed... one flame angel and one mustard tang are the victims of this vicious parasite... my question is should i add prazipro in the qt tank and let it cure the whole system? i still have one royal flasher wrasse in the qt tank... what should i do? this is very informative thread... i wish i have read this site before my beloved fishes perishes... :(

I'm curious.... Does fallowing of the tank kills the flukes?
My tank is empty for almost a month, but suddenly i see a outburst of these worms hanging on to the glass wall.... Thought i had won the battle but.......

Flukes are an obligate parasite, so no fish = no food = equal starving to death for the flukes ;)

The worms your seeing on the glass are likely to be nematodes or some kind of bristle worm or other polychaete type worm, not flukes.
