Mysterious fish deaths are more common now (Flukes)

Can you move your clams to a temporary tank for 10 days? Then you can treat your tank without worrying about your clams. I know that Prazipro at 4x its dosage for 24 hours does get rid of flukes which I did by accident a few months back. It may of gotten rid of the adult flukes but the eggs most likely survived and reinfected my fish. Whether or not Prazipro can get rid of all of your flukes in 4 days depends on the fluke cycle. You can either treat your tank for 4 days and see what happens in a couple of weeks to see if your fish still has flukes or you can remove your clams and treat your tank with Prazipro for 10 days

I would do it slowly rather then rush the treatment----patience wins out in reefing rushing only rushes death or catastrophe

I usually put in half the recommended dose then the 2nd half 24 hours later. Six days later perform 1/3 to 1/2 WC and repeat the prazi process again for another 6 days.

The treatment is done in the main display. It is not possible to catch the fishes without breaking down the whole tank. I had done it before in the past (prazi in DT), had lost a few clams.

Currently, I don't have a second tank except a hospital tank that was heavily medicated with copper. So far, the clams look fine. Some looked stressed, others were like whatever lol.

Is it not possible to take down the qt tank, refill it with tank water and place the clams in there until the end of the treatment?

From my understanding of copper, there would be trace amount in the tank, bio balls, tubings, etc.

I could be wrong. I remember asking about that a long time ago.

I would not reuse any filter media like bioballs etc. I have also heard that but I doubt there would be much absorbed by the tank sealant
Fill the tank and then test for copper before adding the clams or fill the qt and add two small hermits or snails

Perhaps Bill can give us a definte on this ?

Anyone know if prazipro changed their formula?

I have no idea what the shelf life of Prazipro is but you can tell if the Prazipro is at least a year old by looking at the bottle shape. If the bottle is sunken in as if someone slightly squeezed the bottle and put the cap back then its quite old. With any medications there is shelf life. Since Prazipro is not for human consumption there is no need for a stamped expiration date.

You can always order from fostersmith if anyone is worried about getting Prazipro sitting on LFS shelf too long.

"STABILITY
PraziProâ„¢ is stable indefinitely if kept dry when not in use. A nominal
five-year expiration dating, from the date of manufacture, is used on
the product."

Oops repost

The reason why I asked about prazipro's formula being changed is because a few LFS that I know and trust had fluke issues and they tried to dose it with prazipro, but it keeps coming back.

Now I am noticing that same issue with my tank. I have dosed it back to back and the flukes keep coming back.

Flukes reproduce by fission but they also lay eggs.
When you dose with the prazipro you are not killing the eggs.
I have found that you sometimes have to repeat the dosing processs in 3 more 5 day intervals to kill the hatching eggs and then they are gone.
I also don't run carbon for this time since the majority of the flukes have been ridden and poison isn't that great of a factor anymore IMO

Bill---do you know the gestation period for the eggs. I have tried to locate that information on the net but have been unsuccessful. The 5 days repeat dosing has been a shot in the dark for me but has worked.

It can vary with species. I'll try and remember to check with a fish pathologist friend during the week and see if I can get time frame.

There is such a thing as a fish pathologist. I thought the only one that came close to that was PaulB---but he does his autopsies with a knife and fork:lol2:
