Naso TANG not eating

I got a Naso tang from my kids for Valentines day, unfortunatlly they didn't make sure he was eating. I have tried seaweed red brown and green. Is this Nori? Lfs says it is. Brine and myis shrimp. He swims freely and pcks at the rocks, no hidding. He was dripped acclimated for 2 hours so I don't think he is that stressed. Any suggestions?

It took my naso tang about 2 weeks to start eating and even after 2 weeks, he only ate very little. He started pigging out about a month after being in my tank. I got him nice and fat and he got really skinny in those 2 weeks but feeding him pellets got his weight back up in no time. Just give it a week and it should start eating. Good luck

I had one years ago and he/she would not eat for about a week.Would not eat nori or mysis but when spiralina flake was introduced that's what got him started.

Live brine will normally at least get them eating something. From there it is a matter of mixing in other kinds of foods.

Good advice. I've never kept a Naso, but have many tangs. I know there are considered herbivores and so many folks assume nori (or other veggie) will get them eating. If a fish isn't ready to eat, IME & IMO, nothing you offer is going to help. Also IMO & IME; herbivores like all fish are more likely to eat meaty foods first. Live is ideal. I've always thought that tangs and other fish called "herbivores" are really omnivores. They eat a large amount of small animal life along with the algae they graze on. Its amazing how much animal life is in a clump of wild marine algae; I saw a tech at a marine resource lab going through it, little critters all over.

If your naso is grazing on the rocks, I would take some folded up nori sheets and rubber band them to small-ish rocks and place them where your tang likes to graze. Thats how I got my tangs on the stuff, before that they would not touch it on a clip. I like to use "sea veggies" or the seaweed sushi sheets from the grocery store in the ethnic foods section or by the sushi if they have any.

:bounce1: I finally saw him eat!!!!!! He ate some myis shrimp that landed on the rocks. He isn't coming to the surface to eat like the others and I haven't seen him eat the seaweed but it does disappear off the clip of course my foxface matbe eating it.:celeb3:

Oh, by the way I think my foxface has decided that the naso is his best friend. He follows it every where. I read a thread that said that their fox and naso tormented each other. It is funny to watch cause the Naso is huge and my fox is just a baby.

I have tried that but I didn't rubberband it. I just stuck it under the rocks. The stuff at the store is safe. I am concerned with how the clean it and all the chemicals but I guess the lfs stuff has to be processed some how too!

glad he is eating, but sorry about the shrimp. guess he was hungry! I've never had a tang attack a shrimp, but maybe he needed his omnivore food group. :)

;) In my tanks, the fish are kings. They can eat the shrimp, they can eat the corals, as long as they are happy! I don't worry about reefsafe. Fishsafe is more my perspective.

Terrific (I like fish too) but I have never heard of a naso eating a shrimp. :hmm2:

:rollface:It was weird. I just bought the shrimp today and at first he was watching the shrimp and wanted him to get on him. He was almost laying on his side begging. The shrimp finally gave in and went for a ride. It was cool. I have seen a shrimp jump on a fish swimming by but never a fish being the aggresser. I thought all was fine..... I came back ten minutes later and Archie( my tang) had half the shrimp hanging out of his mouth :sad2:. I am in total agreement. IF HE WANTS SHRIMP HE WILL HAVE SHRIMP. THE FISHES RULE!!!!!

I had my naso recently stop eating for a week and a half after having him for 4+ years. He resumed eating with gusto for no apparent reason.
