new camera and lens - pics showoff time!!!

Here's my recipe thats helped me to take tripodless shots like these with my 50d and 60mm macro
Im no pro, but this is what ive found works for me:

-keep the lens 90 degrees to the glass
-I shoot in apeture priority mode
-circular polarizing filter
-usually under expose half stop
-use 2 sec timer, even handheld i find it makes a difference.
-try to rest the front of your lens on the glass or something, I have felt on the edge of my filter
-I use manual focus. frame the shot on the LCD, then use the 5x screen to fine focus.

here are examples ive taken of friends' tanks using the above methods. Im sure yours will be much better shortly!

More better pics to come. I've finally figured out a solution to my camera stabilization problem for top-down shots. Now I need to improve on it :)

Hey everyone,

I had my camera out so I snapped a few quick pics. Enjoy...

Looks like you're getting better.

what you should do for those handhelds and top down shots, is put your camera on a timer. 5sec?

press the button and that will allow you to steady your hands when the shot goes off.

I know sometimes, as I press my shutter button, i can slightly move the camera and cause a slight blurry image.

Thanks for the advice. My SPS tank is easy because I just use my tripod.

I actually do put it on a timer for the top-down shots. I use a remote too. I think a big prob of mine is getting the right focal length. I think I'm too close most of the time. I just need more practice.
