New Gigantea/Nitrofurazone

Hello,

Got a new blue gig, and want to hear thoughts on treatment if necessary. Vendor suggests to put the Nem in DT, and treat DT with nitrofurazone. I read the forum extensively regarding gigs, and have Cipro on hand if needed. Vendor says they have better results with nitro; it isn't affected by light, and can be administered to DT. Don't see much in the forum for this, so looking for advice from the experts.

IMO which ever treatment you pick, it should be isolated from the display. It will less of a headache.

I heard about that as well from ibluewater. Just from my own experiences with Cipro as well as a lot of others experiences, I have a lot of confidence in it. Minh would probably be the one who would know.

I started treating a blue gig today with cipro and it is already responding very well.

And yeah, never treat in your DT

I think the information you have is most likely wrong.

Nitrofurazone is another antibiotic that is often use for skin infection and have been discontinued in the US due to more effective medication available.
It is not effective against some of the gram negative bacterial I am thinking (guessing) that may be the cause of anemone infections. It is not effective in water related infections in human.

Because it is an antibiotic it should not be use in DT. I imagine that it would wreak havoc in our biological filtration system that we depended on for filtration in our reef tank. I would not advice treating reeftank with any antibiotic. IMO, fish only tank should not be exposed to antibiotic either, although FO tank have a much less complicated filtration system.

Nitrofurazone should be kept in dark container because it is affected by light. In solution it is even more affected by light.

Still, if you have a sick anemone, and nitrofurazone is the only antibiotic available to you, I would use it to treat the anemone. I would set up a HT to treat him rather than add it into your DT

I think it is still produced in the US for pet antibiotic but no longer used in people.

I'll stick with Cipro in HT.

I found nitrofurazone (BiFuran) not very effective against bacterial skin infection on fish. Though it seems to be the go-to antibiotic of old school guys in the business.
It worked for me on some fish, but Amoxicillin worked better.
I think the more modern antibiotics are more reliable and effective. Cipro seems to work well for anemones, though even it doesn't work each and every time.

I think in general we would need to have a better knowledge of what we are actually fighting to know what is the ideal antibiotic.

Thanks for the replies. Honestly, there is nothing to treat, yet. Antibiotics in DT has always been a no-no from all I've seen, but didn't know if nitrofurazone was something different. So far, Nem is doing real well.

I was going to do some culture of sick anemones but it really get to be too much. Too expensive for me.
Plus do culture during or after treatment does not give the correct result while get culture from a sick anemone prior to treatment cause a lot of damage to the anemone that is already sick. Basically we would have to stick a large bore needle into the anemone and aspirate some internal fluid for culture. Keven at Live Aquaria already agree to send me some Gigatnea so I can culture but I decided not to go through with it.

So, the gig looked awesome last nite, 2 days since arrival. When I got up, before lights on, it was about 1/3 the size it was last night, a lot 'flatter', and mouth open about an inch. I'd say this guy is a good 10-12" fully open. Here's a couple pics from this afternoon. As lights came up, he started looking much better, but mouth is still about 1/2" -3/4" gaping. Should I treat? Not sure if this morning was a deflation, or just normal first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, I didn't think to take a pic this morning.

Well you saying that it looked "flatter" in itself is saying it was deflated. This is one of those if it were me things and I would treat after seeing the flatness along with the open mouth.

Bob at ibluewater told me the same thing about nitrofurazone. He said the stuff he gets is more pure than off the shelf fish medication and more effective than cipro for anemones. I've had mixed success with cipro personally and was hopefull after talking to Bob.

There is a good chance that the bacterium that causes the anemone disease is something like or actually Vibrio vulnificus.

Treatment recommendation for humans:

In adults with noncholera Vibrio infections other than gastroenteritis, the combination of a third-generation cephalosporin (eg, ceftazidime, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone) and tetracycline or one of its analogues (eg, doxycycline) or a single-agent regimen with a fluoroquinolone (eg, levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin) is the therapy of choice

The reason for mixed results are more likely the progression of the disease and how much damage it has already done. Anemones don't have too much to throw against this and once severe enough damage is done the anemone is doomed even if the antibiotic is successful in killing the pathogen.
That's why you should put new anemones into a QT and start treatment at the first sign of an infection.

As for gigs contracting during the night - all of mine are doing it to varying degrees. My first purple (the only purple I had to treat) gets sometimes a bit limp, but doesn't actually deflates during the night. It is also the one with the by far longest tentacles - it almost looks like a mini crispa. On touch the tentacles tear of easily. My other gigs have much shorter tentacles.

So for "pure" Nitrofurazone... any advice on where to obtain this? Seems like there are many random sources online it's difficult to tell which is reputable and which will be less so.

I'm new to treating anemones and have seen conflicting advice... so seems like I should just pick one. Frankly, I'm having trouble sourcing a blue Gigantea locally or online. The whole process has been pretty frustrating.

You can start with a tan gig and get your feet wet treating gigs. Blue zoo has them in stock. Colored gigs can require patience. Tan gigs may not look as fancy but are still very enjoyable. When a blue one comes your way, you'll be ready. Try Cipro. They are easy to get on eBay.

I don't see much conflicting advice here. Nitrofurazone isn't a good choice even if recommended by some dealers.

I would only use Ciprofloxacin with giganteas - it's the only one that worked for me.
Septra, the second choice, has worked for me with fish diseases, but so far not with anemones. And I wouldn't take any gamble if I have Cipro on hand. I
