New Green Gig!

Your gig definately looks different from mine but looks like a gig just the same. I do agree that it's quite possibly a hybrid though. It's a beauty!

So just to throw a wrench further into this... I was working in the stand today, and noticed the foot planted over eggcrate and onto the glass... So this guy certainly has haddoni traits in'em.

The tentacles are getting longer all over the body, and my onyx pair loves this thing. They easily share half of the time between the "gigs". I still believe this is a hybrid between the two.

Video of today now that the gig has been comfortable for several days.... It's taken on a very interesting shape. If you've seen the transformation from a circle shape to now a long oval, it looks VERY cool and super shaggy! It's foot is in the sand and partially attached to the glass, while the other half is on the underside of a rock...

Has anyone seen a Haddoni look like this before? The tentacles just look WAY too long for me and other than being in the sand doesn't look like a haddoni. The onyx certainly love hanging out in this carpet.

What do you guys think? When the current moves the folds around, I can clearly see nice purple verracue, much more so than before.

I cannot look under my tank so I don't know if the toot of mine is attached to the bottom of the tank, but mine attached under the sand either on the glass or on the rock under the sand

Does yours look as shaggy as mine?

Yes, especially when I feed him a lot.

I haven't fed the gig in days, but it's always just become progressively shaggier. Maybe now that it's truly comfortable it'll turn more into whatever it is supposed to be...... who knows looks awesome.

My Green Gigantea have been in captivity for more than 11 years and have been in my tank for about 8 months

So tonight was interesting... got back from being gone all day and was just observing the Gigs around lights dimming (sunset on the Radions) and my yellow wrasse pair always goes to bed in the sand around that time.... So my female tried to hit her normal spot, bounced off the glass and went into the last row of tentacles on the green gig... It didn't take much more than a second or two for her to get wrapped in tentacles. I tried to help her out and saw her twitching and kicking up sand but eventually I gave up.. So the feeding response is very much haddoni looking..

It's been over an hour (no idea if she got eaten or if she was able to twitch out... very likely eaten) the tentacles are very long, and are vibrating independently like on my purple gig. Which leads me to my question. Do haddoni tentacles vibrate independently like gigs tentacles? There is absolutely Haddoni in the anemone, but also a lot of Gig traits..

He shouldn't be hungry for a little while now :-(

Haddoni sometime can have vibrating tentacles but much less than Gigantea.

I am sorry about your wrasse. I never did see my Flame angel got eaten but see the bone get split out.

Yea... They were an amazing pair and really sad to see her get eaten but in the gigs defense she pretty much just dove into him! While he was eating I was able to see nice bright purple verracue all over the backside of the disk... It has really colored up.

Here is the green gig, settled into its new spot, and shaggier than ever... I have a hard time believing this is a Haddoni..... What do you guys think?? It has gone from 6" to easily about 11-12" now during the day.. What a MONSTER!

Haddoni, Gig, Hybrid?

I think it is mostly Gigantea. I really think your's is more of a Gigatnea than mine. Mine looks more Haddonish than your's, I still consider mine as a Gigantea.

So it's been a month and figured the thread needed an update... I still very much believe this is a Gig\Haddoni hybrid. It has so many characteristics of both. I've personally never seen a haddoni with forked tentacles, much less, some of them are double forked, etc. Easily visible purple verracue, etc..

Either way, some pictures.... It has gotten bigger and is probably 10" now during the day. Initially only part of the foot had planted on the glass below, now I can see a LOT more of the foot and it's probably 4-6" in diameter.. it's HUGE. I think when this guy gets fullly healthy he will be a very very large anemone.

What do you guys think?!

Just did a big water change and noticed he was as shaggy as ever... Just a little video... I just am hoping that as the days go by, he'll look more Gig and eventually be a huge rug.. Regardless though, my clowns share their time in between Gigs, so whatever!

At this point, this Gigantea has been in our care for going on six months now. My hypothesis here is if you look at the pedal, there are so many baby tentacles growing.. This guy was tiny when I got'em and probably started to eat his own tentacles to stay alive. Now that he has gotten 3-4x in size so quick, those are regrowing. I'm thinking after they are back, or at least there are much more of them, the full Gigantea look will come out. No cipro was ever used on this guy...

Walked by the tank last night and have never seen him this shaggy. If this is a haddoni, well then it's not like one I've ever seen before.

Sorry for the crappy iPhone picture.

I haven't seen many (greens tend to be less common than purples, which are the most common, then blue) but most of the green ones I've seen tend to look like yours -- less shaggy and very haddoni-like. Conversely, I've also seen haddoni with longer than usual tentacles.

I'm willing to bet that the color variants go beyond just the color. For example, when I had my tan/mauve gig with my purple one, I noticed distinct differences with tentacle length and thickness. Of course, this probably had to do with these particular gigs, but I've seen similar characteristics in the same color morphs.
