New LED DIY Build

kcress: the sand is a really fine powder aragonite that I got from the LFS, when I put it in it really clouded up for about a week then settled down, but I wish I would have got a slightly more course sand as a diamond goby clouds it up with all his sifting.

I love the whiteness! All the aragonite I can find is yellowish none seems to be white.:hmm4:

kcress: yes I got this stuff cause it was so white. My old tank I used a courser grain sand and it was quite yellow. I will try to find out what I bought next time I go by the LFS. The other thing that's quite different is the goby - his sifting really stirs up the sand, but boy does he keep it clean.

Jimmy: I am running the strings at around 800ma. The amount of current that they will put out is based on the load, but I would say that 1000ma is doable. No idea on the optics because I'm not using any on mine, but I would think that focusing the light will make a noticeable difference (I might try to do this with my XM-L's if I can find relatively inexpensive optics to use <- any ideas?)

Unless you're willing to adjust the optics meant for an XP-E or XR-E, there's not much choice for XM-L optics.
For as far I know there's only one 60° optic available.
I know the clay-boa (hmmm, seems a to be a name which we're not supposed to mention) has them for 2.48,
which I think is a lot if you need 50 or 60 of them and considering the alternative ......
but that's me, I am trying to stay within a budget (and I know I'm not gonna make it) but that budget is/was basically €10,- per LED
I've got 150 optics for €100 ($138,-) from China which will fit the XR-E's perfectly, and with a little epoxy they will fit the XM-L's too.
