New LiveAquaria Shipment - 1.009 SG, 7.2 pH, 2 ppm Ammonia

Try to calibrate at point you're trying to achieve. Some models, calibrating at 0 introduces error when the point of measurement is further away. Not the same for every refractometer.

gfrisco, I had the same experience. I did not know that the calibrtion fluid could change over time. it is always something in this hobby

Another thing you can do is to ask vendor/LFS for their measured salinity as another data point to help validate your readings. As I said earlier, my experiences with LA have been quite consistent, so if I measure differently I assume my readings are off, and then figure out why.

I've actually done that for years, then repeatedly got disappointed when I got home, checked their salinity, and find it is much lower than they said it would be, hence leading me to mistrust them - which is actually what led me to try LiveAquaria.

The only thing I didn't do, though I thought about doing it many times, was actually have them test it with a refractometer with me standing there. If I had, I probably would have caught my inaccurate calibration fluid problem much sooner!

Right - that's the whole point of using a 35ppt calibration standard!

Ummm. Temperature will have a great effect one way or the other. If your shipment came in and was 73 degrees it will be different than at 80. Know they keep aquaria at lower levels for a lot of the reasons mentioned by others but this doesn't surprise me and the livestock should be fine.

this is a good point.

Hi all -

After approx 10 years in the reefkeeping hobby, I decided to try LiveAquaria for the first time. I liked the idea that LiveAquaria keeps their California facility SG around 1.019 - simplifying the acclimation to the 1.024 I keep in my DT. This is actually also the first time I've ever ordered livestock from online.

Well, my order of a Kole Tang and a single clownfish came today - 6 hours late due to severe weather (per UPS' tracking info). I checked the SG and it was 1.009!!! I'm curious if anyone else has received any shipments lately and what the incoming SG was? So much for 1.019. This was tested, btw, with a Milwaukee ATC Refractometer calibrated with Pinpoint Calibration solution.

Also, is it typical to have such a high ammonia level from an overnight shipment? I have no experience with ordering from online.

Healthwise - the clown seems OK, but the tang is acting sluggish. They're in my QT now but not sure if it's too late for the tang. Fingers crossed!
My last purchase was from Divers Den (Live Aquaria) and they came in at 1.024. If I remember right, they were shipped out of Wisconsin.

I'm looking forward to getting something from Divers Den as well. They advertise that they keep there water at 1.024 so that's good to hear confirmation.
