New obsession, a little slice of the rain forest

I actually reset mine up....the same way. I wanted a little more water, plus the base layer wasn't deep enough or level enough. So, I added more and cut a new screen divider. I got a huge roll for $5 at home depot. It's the same screen that came with my kit. I took a pic to show you how the water line doesn't touch the soil. I guess your way is fine too? I'm just goin' by what I read on blackjungle.com I like the gravel look better, but the say the terralite or hydroton allows better drainage. Did you use a screen divider? That keeps the soil from creepin' down and cloggin' up the gravel...

Yeah I used screen. I plan on adding more coco bedding to raise mine up more. Yours looks good. My wife and son want me to make my 60 cube reef tank into a dart tank now!
 
whats that green grassy stuff you guys have?...what's it called?...i could find any similar to that stuff at the critter or ebay
 
I have lots of different plants. I think you may be talking about the moss. Look for java moss. Also if you research plants you can find tons at home depot or lowes.
 
What I used is called frog moss. You can get it at petsmart and petco. Its like $8 for a bag. It's dry when you buy it, but you just bury it in soil up to the green and it's suppose to start spreading.

the stuff around the background is just terrium moss, i think spagnum (sp?) I think it has to be replaced in time though.

I am glad you guys started this thread. My daughter caught a common water frog the other day and he stayed in our empy pool for a few days with some crickets and a makeshift habitat till I set up a home for him. I got the 29 gallon in her room and thats as far as it went and he must have climed out since he disapeared. But it sparked mine and her interest in frogs and I was looking at the crappy set up at petsmart thinking I needed to go see the critters set ups for ideas and you guys gave me all kinds of info ( and a good link).

I have a ehime laying around and a great 40 tall with a stand and canopy I think would make a great frog set up. Can you get the water deeper so some small fish can swim or will the frog just eat them? I haven't reaserched frogs past this thread and seeing the red bellied toads at petsmart :). I had no clue frogs were so expensive but WOW those you guys have are sweet looking! I need to be working on my reef tank but its so daunting thinking of all the work that lies ahead with that thing I just keep putting it off for smaller fun projects like this one!

Also Steve you should have called and I would have definetly given one or 2 of your snake babies a home. They are adorable!
 
I think the fire bellied toads might eat fish. The 80 bowfront at AC has killifish in it. Also has reed frogs and some cool geckos. I'm sure you could make the water deeper. Just have to come up with a way for the land/water seperation.

I had to get rid of the babies quick because they started fighting. I guess 9 snakes in 1 10 gal. wasn't a good idea. I plan on buying a custom rack with heat that will hold 30 babies so I will be prepared next time.

I think it's a fowlers toad. I'm not a 100% sure, but that's the closest match I could come up with.

Ok so I am gathering supplies to turn my 12 gallon nano into a dart frog vivarium and I wanted to advice on lighting. I have the lights from when that tank was a saltwater tank. I will have to construct a new hood but I needed to know if this is too much lighing. I have a coralife 24 watt and a coralife 24watt actinic. Plus I have some moonlight leds I want to mount for nightime in the new hood. I will only use one of the lights but is that still too much light?
 
i dont think it'll be too much lighting....ive research a little and it seems like a lot of froggers recommend t5 or PCs as optimal lighting

i plan on using my reef lights as well....ive got 10k bulbs but its recommended to use 6500k bulbs....so whenever these burn out it'll switch'em
 
The lights are more for the plants. The frogs are diurnal so the light does not bother them. Just make sure whatever lights you use dont raise the temp to much.
 
That's what I was gonna say. Pretty much all is needed is a full spectrum flouresant bulb...

hey guys...there's a guy out in knoxville who's selling some darts....and i was thinking about buying some and having them overnighted...would anyone want to buy some with me to save on shipping?
 
I understand most people probably wouldn't want to, but I'll be commuting to East TN probably in November... definitely at least for Thanksgiving if you would want me to pick them up. :)

I know thats a bit away, but just FWIW. :)

thanks for the offer brandon...but i'll probably have frogs by then.....if not though, i'll let you know ;)

shipping is only around $40 overnight....which isnt too bad if you get more than 2 frogs...but if only one, then its better to just get one from the store

however the frogs i want are $100-150 at AC, which im not willing to spend on my first frog....the guy in knoxville only wants $ 20- 45 depending on the species.....so its a heckova deal....hehe....

i love AC and all, but i'll pass this time....if anyone is interested, let me know
