New Reef Octupus Skimmer Thread (Pacific Coast Imports)

Yea, mine didn't leak when I was using it. Only thing that happens is water can come out the air inlet tube when the circulation pump is off if you have the water level really high, but that happens with any skimmer (my Deltec does the same thing). Since it has a drain, it's pretty hard to make it flood if you have a nice big drain cup.

lets get this leak misconception straight here. all needle wheel skimmers will leak water if you turn off the nw pump & your hose
is lower than your skimmer water line. thats where the water will come out. solution is to make sure your hose is higher than the water in the skimmer.

I'll make mine higher, but I wanted some wet skimmate while I was curing live rock. It is a bad design flaw to make the holder for the airline tubing level with, if not below, the union. I'm glad it happened while I was at home. The other problem is, if the power goes out, the recirculation pump won't put air back into the chamber. I had to blow on the airline tubing to get all of the water out, and only then did it start working again.

It is kind of odd that you have to "kick start" the 2000 by blowing in it. I haven't had that problem with the 3000. I wonder is the 1000 has it?

i know ASMs can leak... , I was thinking only of its use in sump... the 2000 and 3000 are probably too big for any sump...

fareforce, i use a gx1500 for my feed pump. I don't notice any noise issues, i 'm flowing 200 gph. more or less. @ 4' head throttled back.

Hi to all i want to know if somebody from here has used Pacific Coast skimmers??..this model in particular : PS-150..you can see it on Pacific coast homepage, look almost like a ASM skimmer, are they good?..they dont tend to be problematic?? it has a GenX 1000 pump with needle wheel and it says it's for 150 gals (of course i think it's for 75 at most)...it's good for me??..I have a reef that it's 45 Gals in total (30 + 15 of the sump)...

Hope to hear some answers

My hose is long enough to...

My hose is long enough to...

feed it through the holder on the main body then install the silencer above the holder. It extends the air hose inlet above the
water level. Hope this helps,

Ron

The way it is made, the tube can't be higher unless I get some extra tubing. The little filter thing that they put on the end of the tubing sits in the bracket below the neck. I guess I could put extra tubing on top of that, but that is a silly design flaw if it is true. I'll experiment with it tomorrow, because I don't want to come home to a mess on my floor again.

Anyone here using the RPS-1000? There doesn't seem to be much mention of it. I'm trying to decide between this and the ASM G1x.

The Octopus is around $190, and the G1-x with recirc mod would be around $220. Both of these would be running in sump, fed by the overflow directly, skimmer a < 50g tank.

Thanks!
Aaron

Hi!

It is a shame the price we pay for this kind of things. Almost everything is manufactured in China, and there is much cheaper!
See an online shop who sells the Octopus stuff:
http://sc.yfsz.com/class.asp?aid=160&nid=426
The price is the one at the right.

Anyway, these are much better, and this is the factory shop.
http://www.ocean-shop.com/timesmark.asp?MarkName=AQUA-EXCEL Here the price is in red, at the middle. They dont speak any English (I do speak Chinese, hehehe) but they would give 20% discount when buying five or more.

Remember to divide by eight to get the price in USD.

And Hailea (http://www.hailea.com/E-hailea/produce.htm) is the OEM of AquaMedic. They are only allowed to sell in China with their own brand. The quality is, as the product itself, the very same. The price is not: The Titan Chiller 1HP costs in China $285, delivery included.

And Aihua (http://www.aihua-lighting.com/v2/en/products_info.asp?ArticleID=109) are the biggest halide OEM producer in the world (Hamilton, XM...). Do you want to see some prices???

MH250w 14000k, Mogul USD10.5
MH400w 10000K, Mogul USD11.5
MH400w 14000K, Mogul USD12.0

Isn't it CRAZY?

Hahahahah! Sounds good, fareforce! My point is (as shown already earlier in this thread) it is not that the stuff is that much expensive. That a bulb's price increases nine-fold, or a skimmer goes up $350 in two or three steps once in the US, it has only one name: Greed.

I think the reason why prices are so high on reef products is that the consumer will buy and the most popular brands just keep getting higher in price and consumers will continue to shell out the cash for the items and makers of these brands will continue to produce $25 items and sell them to consumers for $200 and they know that consumers will continue to buy their products.

What really suck for me isn't the price of reef stuff. It is getting it shipped up here in Alaska. The 3000 cost me $119 just in shipping!
