New Reef Octupus Skimmer Thread (Pacific Coast Imports)

BLockamon, I remember my skimmer's foam head was less aggressive when I added Phosban (using a reactor), but I don't think it was for more than a few hours and I never completely lost the foam head.

Hope the skimmer is back to normal foaming action!

I noticed a brief interruption of foam stabilization w/ running phosban in a reactor, but it straightened out fairly quickly. On a side note, I'm using my phosban reactor as a waste collector, as I have nearly no load, it's small size works perfect (for the time being, that is!)

Thanks guys, the skimmer was recovering after work last night, but then I added a second reactor with carbon. Down she went again.

It's looking a little better this morning. I should be up to normal foaming again by tomorrow. Next time I'll valve them in a little more slowly.

I just ordered the rps-2000 for my currently medium-stocked 140G reef with refugium. I would not have been able to fit the rps-3000 into my cabinet. Do you think that this will be adequate skimming?

Too late now anyway, but nevertheless interested to hear opinions. Current solution is a AquaC Remora HOT skimmer on the sump (totally inadequate I know - used to have it on my 70G tank), so rps-2000 should be a reasonable upgrade...

If I had to guess why you are loosing your foam head, I would have to say it is probablly more due to oil (ie. from your hands) or residue (from the manufacturing proccess) being on the equipment that went into the tank/sump. Skin oil will instantly kill the foam head, and depending on how much there was, it could take some to recover.

One trick I learned on how to make it recover faster is to add one drop of water conditioner that has some sort of bio-coat (ie. aloe) per 50 gallons. This will get your skimmer to over react, until it starts to react normally.

JoeESSA, the 3000 would have definitely been better, but you should be OK with the 2000. Just be sure to watch the feedings and stocking level.

Do you guys have contact info for the Reef Octopus customer service?

I really think my RPS3000 is not functioning properly... I looked at my bubbles last night after cleaning it, and they were WAY too big, the pics I see you guys posting showed bubbles size of ball point pen tip going all the way up the column... mine are much larger, especially half way up

Tony has contact info for them. Either he's got direct connection, or he can probably get you all the parts, I beleive he was friends with a distributor over there. Wait 'till he gets home, I'm betting he can help you.

In the meantime, post pics! Maybe we can figure it out?

Just got the rps 1000 today. I am using a maxijet 1200 for the feed pump but it seems it is making to much turbulence. Any suggestions?

My bubbles

My bubbles

My bubbles on my 2000 after cleaning are larger in size. Then after about 24 hrs of running they get to the optimal pinpoint size!!

I think you will fine with the 2000, this is really a good skimmer, and has performed beyond my expectations, I can not imagine how it is going to perform when I am able to figure a way to attach an aquabee to the skimmer!!!

JoeESSA, an Aquabee is a type of needlewheel pump used by H&S and Deltec. Specifically they are the Aquabee 2000 and Aquabee 2001. You can buy the H&S version of the pumps at Finsreef. These would be a replacement for the current needlewheel pump on the skimmer.

I run my RPS 1000 with a MJ 400, next to no turbulance and good water flow. Remember you want about 2X the volume of system pumping through your skimmer. With my MJ400 on my 58 gal, it seems to be the perfect match, I am getting super dark dry skimmate out my 1000.

Trips, what size bit did you use to bore out the venturi? I assume the 1000 has the 90 degree bend in the pipe like the 2000 does. I'm not able to picture exactly what you've done. I'm not experiencing any real issues w/ mine, but I think it would be valuable for the thread.

Daniel

Daniel,
I didn't use a drill bit. I used a minature boring bar on a vertical knee mill. I took about 50 thousanths of an inch of the ID of the air intake. AKA. The little white thing you attatch the airline to. I can measure what my new internal diamete is this weekend when I get back down to where the tank is again. I will let ya know what drill bit it is closest to.

ghever ... wait for it to settle down and the bubbles will come good ... trust me :)

Indeed, I didn't catch that it was just after cleaning. After cleaning skimmers, the bubbles are all crazy for a few hours, you'll be fine, I'm sure.

I just went to octopusskimmer.com (AKA-marinesolutions) and bought the 3000 RC. They have the best prices that I have found. This thing is huge and looks to be well made.
I have a spare turbo pump from a red sea berlin skimmer that I am thinking of using for the feed pump. Do you guys think this pump will work as a feed pump?

Don't know about the feed pump, Tank ... but you will be:blown: blown away with this skimmer. I have one and it is truly fantastic value. Be sure to give it a good clean with vinegar solution (run it through the pump as well) to remove any manufacturing residues.
