fareforce, both my 3000s are external. The only leak I have is a small weep at a PVC joint that I didn't glue (on the outlet pipe). That skimmer is going to be moved in a few weeks when I get a new stand, so I'll live with the leak until then.

tonyf, I'm not sure, but I think its normal for the small bubbles to pop at first on a new needlewheel skimmer. Both of mine did that. After a little while, you should see the bubbles starting to combine into foam rather than bursting. It probably has something to do with the water surface tension until the skimmer breaks in.

I have a few changes to make to my setup. The one at church needs to have the gasket modified to increase air flow. My one at home needs a larger feed pump. I love the air flow on the home one (with gasket mod), and it can create a nice foam head. However, I'm not getting a lot of skimmate, probably because I'm not feeding the skimmer very fast at all.
 
Well I bought the Octopus-200 Needle Wheel by Coral Vue there's come with the 750gal pump. I bought it from Aqua Cave and I must say Albert was there to answer all my E-mail's right away ship's right away and does a great job packing.I turned it into a recircation skimmer in three hour's and work's as good as any of those high priced skimmer's.It started to produce a dense foam head right away not bad for a 8in."dia.X 25in." skimmer for $208.00 shipped.Willie
 
Thanks Blockamon, I suspected as much. This is my first run with a recirc NW as opposed to becketts so I don't have an even comparison.

Really needed to know that the extended break-in period is normal so all is ok. Thanks ghever!

Big Time! Foaming has started this morning and looks very good.

Running quite dry atm and will play around with consistency once it starts to expel.

My remora broke yesterday, and I was deciding between the turboflotot 1000multi and then I found these. I have a refugium and can fit these in the cabinet/sump due to the fact that the skimmer can basically sit behind my fuge and the pump in the fuge. I'm glad that I found this thrad(and the original). I have been reading it for the past few hours and skipped to the end, so I'm sorry if I missed anyone already talking about these.

The PS-PCPS-350 is not quite the same thing as a Reef Octopus but is still a decent skimmer. This is the same exact skimmer as a Coralife Super Skimmer. But unless you were to have a specific need for a HOB, the PS-CVOCT-NW-200 would be a better option IMO.

Just want to make sure.. The PS-PCRPS-3000 (Pacifc Coast RPS-3000) is the one everyone is talking about right?
 
What about the PS-PCRPS-1000 is this a good skimmer and has any one use it. I am looking to run this on 60g system but not 24/7 I was looking at the one the dh posted above but the footprint is to big for my sump. Thanks for the input.

I've got mine on a 30 gallon + 15 gallon sump. Foot print is too big for mine too, so it's actually tilted in my sump to fit. Which I'm sure isn't great for it... but it's working really well.
Why not run your skimmer 24/7? It may buy you extra time if something spawns... ?
 
True but I have an small expierment that I want to conduct. Some say that LPS and Zoas like a little dirty water. I am going to run the system with this skimmer for X amount of months 24/7 then the smae amount just during the day or night and see which does better. I might end up running it 24/7 and feeding high quality foods. Who know been planning this setup for ayear and it is time to get it off the ground and get water in it. lol Thanks for the input stephany
 
D. I would prefer to get the skimmer that you mentioned, but there is not enougjh room inside of my refugium/sump(46g bowfr, about 12g refugium/sump). So the hang-on skimmers are about my only choice. I really like the idea of having it hang on the in cabinet fuge, so it is out of sight. That's why I like the turboflotor1000multi and the hang on sump pacific coast. I looked at the cralife superskimmer,but the water level in my fuge is too low to use the superskimmer. I was just wondering if anyone used the pacific coast hang-on sump skimmers and had some feedback, otherwise I will get the turboflotor. Sorry to hijack the thread, I should probably start a different one.
 
canesfan44, if you can fit any of the RPS models (like RPS-1000), you can also use them outside the sump. All you need is the feed pump (a small powerhead) in the sump, and run the skimmer drain line into the sump. To protect against overflows you can either use a waste collector (My Reef Creations for example) or run the cup drain to a small collection vessel in the sump. If you go the waste collector route, you'll need to seal up the cup lid with electrical tape. I do this on mine, and it works well (the color also matches nicely :) ).

The only concern I would have with the hang-on skimmers is that there is nothing to prevent a wet carpet if the cup overflows. I have had a Turboflotor 1000 (classic not multi) for two years and never had an overflow. I'm not sure that model can flood. The Multi should be similar, but I don't know.
 
I just ordered a 3000 today just out of curiousity how long did it take for you to get your order from reeftanksupply?

What size tubing is used for the incoming feed water? I am wanting to get the plumbing straighten out so I am ready when the skimmer gets here?
 
I ordered mine from custom aquatic. Will be here on friday. I believe reeftanksupply takes about the same 1 days process, then all up to ups ground.

Thanks I didn't realize that those skimmers could stand alone, I always figured they had to fit into the sump. That's even better. So basically, if I got the RPS-1000(the rest are way too tall for my cabinet), I would just need to get another water pump, to pump water from the sump to the skimmer. It says I should feed it 1-1.5x the total volume, so a little pump like a small maxi-jet? Then I just get the outlet(possibly a little modification) to feed back to my sump and install a drain on the collection cup to a larger collection container. I feel stupid for not doing something like this years ago, instead of going with the hang-on.
Is that basically all it would take? If o I will be ordering it tonight. I neverthought I would be able to use a big recirculating skimmer on my tank, thank you all for the info and suggestions.
 
That is about it. I will be using a maxijet 1200 to power my RPS-3000. I havn't heard of anyone putting the RPS-3000 in a sump. Way to big of a footprint. At least in my senario. It will actually sit next to my tank stand.
