fareforce, both my 3000s are external. The only leak I have is a small weep at a PVC joint that I didn't glue (on the outlet pipe). That skimmer is going to be moved in a few weeks when I get a new stand, so I'll live with the leak until then.
tonyf, I'm not sure, but I think its normal for the small bubbles to pop at first on a new needlewheel skimmer. Both of mine did that. After a little while, you should see the bubbles starting to combine into foam rather than bursting. It probably has something to do with the water surface tension until the skimmer breaks in.
I have a few changes to make to my setup. The one at church needs to have the gasket modified to increase air flow. My one at home needs a larger feed pump. I love the air flow on the home one (with gasket mod), and it can create a nice foam head. However, I'm not getting a lot of skimmate, probably because I'm not feeding the skimmer very fast at all.
