New Reef Octupus Skimmer Thread (Pacific Coast Imports)

I'm sure that the OR draws that much air at a minimal head height, however, I wouldnt expect it to do much better than the octopus pumps at the height of the RPS-3000

i had both pumps out & i got 10~lpm with ocean runner & 7~lpm with the octopus in the same bucket with the same venturi. what does this mean? probably nothing. but 500 liters more flow & 3lpm air is worth looking into. the rps3000 is a real good skimmer for the $. you really don't have to fiddle with it. just set it & forget it. where else are you going to find a recirculating external for the money.
for the price.

Pluto-Does the OR needlewheel fit in the Octopus pump, can you test the air draw with the 2 different impellers in the octopus pump when in operation on the skimmer? I wonder if it is a difference in the needlewheel or the motor?

I also agree about looking into possible pump changes, I'd love to see an H&S Eheim on an RPS-3000 for $700 and change.

$700. now thats getting out of hand lol. the or wheel didn't work too well for me in the octo. pump. it was really weak. it dropped in though & didn't grind. so that was a good thing it. pulled 5 lpm or less. the or pump is mostly a drop in. the others may reqiure
more creative plumbing. i don't want to drill big holes in my
skimmer yet.

Pirate, just make sure that you take full advantage of that with a FAT order!

clkwrk, Is that 13-14 LPM or SCFH. If it's LPM, that's higher than the Deltec website rates it for. Is it a Deltec or H&S aquabee?

If it's really that good, I might have to look into one. The aquabee w/ induction fitting is only $150 at finsreef.

It is the one that used to come with the turbofloaters a long time back. I was very surprised myself as it draws more than the sedra 5000's do.

and yes 13-14 scfh

OK, that sounds more like it. 14 SCFH is about 6.6 LPM; a little more than the Octupus 3000 pulls. I wonder what the Aquabee w/ the H&S needlewheel would do though.

Anyone have data on the air draw of a Sedra 9000? If not, I'll try and get some this weekend. My LFS in Richmond has skimmers running the Sedra 9000 and OR3700 running on his display and system tanks. Anyone else fell a suck-off coming? (Sorry, that sounded way to kinky!).

need either 2000 or 3000

need either 2000 or 3000

I would like to order one of the pacific coast skimmer's. My system is a 90 gallon tank and a 30 gallon sump, So I am about 110 gallon total.. I want to buy the 3000, but I do not know if I need something that big. Room is not an issue with the skimmer, the question is do I need the 3000 or will the 2000 suffice???

If you've got the room, I would recommend the 3000. That's what I'm using on my 90 right now, and it will provide me room to grow in the future.

I hope the 2000 is right!!!

I hope the 2000 is right!!!

I went with the 2000 skimmer, I liked that price a little better. especially when the wife asks " do you really need another skimmer?" I already have two es5's, and the ASM mini. But, I have to try a recirculating skimmer and the price is a lot better than the Deltec.

I also noticed that there is a huge difference in price between custom aquatic and reeftanksupply!!! I ordered from reef tanksupply, Way Cheaper!!!

Custom Aquatic will price match, but when I tried to get any info from them through email, it was a nightmare, So I went with Reef Tank Supply and so far, even though I have yet to recieve my skimmer, I'm super satisfied w. the service. Matt is awesome!

That said, I think everyone will be fine either way, this was not intended as a CA bash, just my experience.

My skimmer is shipped, I'll take pics when she gets here!

I have been in contact with the manufacturer regarding the low air draw through the venturi and have received a response that suggests that the venturi hole (shaft) may be misaligned. I am waiting on further explanatory diagrams to pinpoint what exactly the fault is and how it might be fixed.

The skimmer manufacturer has advised me that there has been a batch of the venturi nipples (short length of pipe connecting the skimmer to the pump inlet) that has a misaligned shaft. The shaft referred to is the one that runs // to the length of the nipple and exits at the pump end -- it connects the air inlet with the venturi outlet. This shaft is drilled too close to the edge and breaches the water inlet tube of the venturi nipple -- a very small pin hole near the end of its penetration into the wall of the venturi nipple.

A replacement part has been dispatched to me for testing.

Must say that Reef Octopus manufacturer and its local Australian agent have been absolutely first class to deal with. Well done!

Tone :-)

tonyf, please keep us posted! If you can, please post pictures of the two venturi nipples. I'm curious whether mine if affected. Thanks.

Although I don't think it's reeftanksupply's fault... I left a thread re: my experience with them and Custom Aquatics in the vendor experiences forum.
