New S. Mertensii

True, I would have thought that yours would have moved over sooner. But, clowns are goofy that way. My skunks completely ignore my other Haddoni in the tank -- even when theirs decides to pull completely into the sandbed.

Now that is funny. silly spoiled clowns:p

I don't want to take the purple LT out though:(.

Good luck with yours...
nice pictures sedgro ..I posted on that last thread..I said " more pictures please:D if DD gets another Mertensii, it is going to be mine. :frog:lol"
Ok so I got it from reef science..I should have said "The next time I see a mertensii for sale online it is going to be mine."

My mertens was pretty good at catching food meant for the fish, i.e. mysis, Formula 1, Rod's food etc.. Of course it took up half the tank, so it caught quite a bit. Out of a cube of Formula 1, I figured he would catch about a quarter of it. I only target fed it once every 2 or 3 weeks as well.

Clowns are pretty territorial and once they find an anemone they don't care much whether or not it is their natural host. If your anemones are in different areas of the tank, I would be worried that one might adopt the mertens and leave its mate. In clowns sometimes the desire to be the king of you own anemone wins out over the desire to be a pair. In the wild, potential mates are always drifting by. Anemone homes are hard to come by. Since there is only one breeding pair per anemone, it benifits the species to have pairs in all the anemones. If the anemones are close, it is not a problem. If they are on opposite sides of the tank, you may end up with two single clowns defending their anemones from each other.

I had a pair break up that way.

oo that would be bad. :( I don't think I could have another pair in the tank with my chrys. My tank isn't big enough to support two pairs of clowns...right? If they do move to the mertensii hopefully they will move together. Thats what they did when I added the plta. They both left the bta and went to the lta. I am going to try feeding the clowns only on the Mertensii side of the tank.

No, I don't think you could have two pairs in there.

If it helps....

Years ago I had both a BTA and Haddoni in my 75, the male Clarkii would spend a lot of time in the BTA ( and would sleep in it each night ). The female on the other hand would spend most of her time ( sleeping included ) in the Haddoni. That arrangement didn't effect their spawning at all. The male did most of the guarding, since they laid the eggs near the BTA.

No you are right, your tank would not support two pairs of clowns. What I meant was (and I think you got the point, just making sure) that the clowns could split and you would end up with two females that would eventually start fighting. There is enough distance between those two anemones for that to happen. Obviously if it did start to happen the solution would be to remove one of the anemones before any permanent changes could occured in your clowns.

Question again, have you ever seen it get rid of waste? Its mouth is still closed while it pushed out some waste. Is this normal? I have never seen solidish brown stuff come out of my LTA's mouth.Well I have seen it not fully digested things come out of the LTAs mouth. That was when I first got the LTA, I didn't know a good feeding schedule then. I am not freaking out I'm just curious.. When I had a sebae it did the same thing but the sebae wasn't healthy and its mouth wasn't always closed like the mertensii. TIA for anyone with or had a mertensii that answers my questions.

Also.. Will the mertensii be ok without clowns or is it better with clowns? It looks like the clowns aren't going to move out of the plta soon. That is why I am asking:)

Beautiful anemone. Can I borrow your husband? Mine just rolls his eyes when he actually notices anything new. :D

Wicked

Wicked

If it wasnt for the pics of your, I probably would have jumped on a purple gigantea in NJ. I gotta tell ya that thing looks awsome.

I am waiting on a local vendor to see if they can get a mertensii, mostly likely not so ill go for the purple one.

Thanks Debi..well he doesn't always let me have what ever I want for my tanks :D..I forgot to mention, it was a six day late bday present. I'd rather see him roll his eyes than get mad. There was only a couple of things I bought for the tank without asking him first.

Thank you..I bet you would have better luck with your lfs than I would. The fish stores around here knew what a haddoni was but when I mentioned Mertensii they said " is that a kind of fish?"

Purple gigantea in NJ? Reefvette, if you decide not to buy it, would you mind sharing which pet shop in NJ has a purple gigantea?

Again, I am only speak for my Haddonis, but each time they have "relieved" themselves ( not that I watch it often. ;) ) the month has been tightly closed. Sometimes it protrudes a bit, but still closed.

My green Haddoni has been clownless :( since I got it ( about 9 months ago ) and looks/acts the same as my clowned blue one. ( both in the same tank )

Thanks Todd..makes me feel better knowing that what it is doing is ok.... about the (not that you watch them often.) I don't either I just noticed yesterday. So brown turds coming out is ok? When I gave it mysis I didn't know it was going to do that..so it relieved itself with the mysis. oops..today it quickly at the mysis..that is a good sign right?

Yesterday they wouldn't leave the LT..Today they are back in the bubble tip. The bta is on a rock inbetween the LTA and Mertensii. Maybe this is a step closer to the Mertensii? I hope so:)

:eek1: Oh my gosh..yay the male is in the mertensii..YAY hopefully the female will follow him..woohoo! usually she does follow him. OH yeah its a good day.:D
