New Stream Holder and proper use of mounting hardware

thanks rvitko,

I know what your saying, I havent exactly gone the norm over here in the uk as everyone uses sumps over here as well.

I am currently updating my web site to show in more detail what we have done. Should be more upto date by the end of the week. I will repost a link then so people can check it out if they so wish.

Its a very young tank but everything has been transfered ok and the flow from the tunzes is great. Cant say I'm overly happy with the skimmers yet but I'm sure they will work out ok, I read somewhere that you dont recommend and area of high water turnover to locate the skimmers, unfortunatley this is where I may have a problem.

Craig,

reefislife,

Are those teeth you have at the bottom of your "flow box" if they are how do you keep the sand out? In the picure it looks like you have a flow gate on both ends of the flow box.

maybe he's going bare bottom....his other tank has a fairly coarse appearing gravel bed, maybe the pix is deceptive.....

hi Mexican Hermit

good question, I think I fluked it to be honest, first we put very course gravel (read course as meaning 20mm diameter( in front of the weirs, then the rock and then I put sand in afterwards.

The sand isnt fine DSB size though it is courser than that,. we have also used crushed shell.

I dont know to some the only way to go is ultra fine sand across the whole tank, but I wanted my tank to look more natural so have used many sizes. not sure if I like it myself yet to be honest as it does trap crap.

Like all things though it would be boring to go the tried and tested route, even if I have to eat humble pie in a month or so and try and syphon it all out again.

We'll see.

Craig.

Regarding the skimmer, what model do you have? Also, give it at least 2weeks to break in, they really do almost nothing for a week and then kinda start working and then they settle in. I only use Tunze but most of my friends tell me I'm "old school" and use the Bullet II or a big Euroreef. If flow is the problem maybe build a small "bathtub" of acrylic to prevent it from getting excessive flow.

ahh, that one I can answer.

NO, as it goes though the canister filter FIRST, the cannister is currently (and doing a good job) acting as my closed loop pump,

Therefore my bag of anto phos and Polyfilter stop any nasty stuff.

skimmer is two (one at each end, hopfully for even skimming, sounds good if nothing else) 3140/2

Tank is 270 UK gallons or 230 uk gallons after rock displacement.

Skimmer is rated at 250 - 500 UK gallons each. So hopefully you will say I will be ok and not to be paranoid.

Craig.

The 3140/2 is a good one, generally performs very well, though it is tempermental about water level. If it makes a slurping/gurgling sound raise it up a bit. I generally find about 1.5" out of the water is best (brown housing). I also would run the pump full blast and the venturi three full turns open. Keep the riser cup clean and in the future when the new wide throat riser comes out I would consider upgrading as the biggest problem is the crud accumulates where the neck narrows and the foam column is broken by the debris. They are redoing the cup design to be bigger and without the restriction, I have a prototype and it certainly makes cleaning easier and boosts performance.

quickly off subject.....When is the magnet coming out to secure the stream to the glass? I rather not use that bracket. thanks!
