New to Stomatopods and looking for input

If that's live rock you might want to get sw in there now and get everything up and running. Doing that may help avoid any die-off in the rock.

I think its just base rock. I could be wrong. Very nice shape though, will make great live rock once it gets covered by coraline

I guess it depends on the supplier but I always got mine wrapped up with water. Two types of live rock, cured and uncured. I got cured, didn't wash it off and my tank cycled in less than two weeks if you could even call it a cycle. I got mine locally, no shipping involved.

That rock from bulkreefsupply is just dry. It's not actually liverock, they call it dry eco rock. It's like the stuff from Marco Rocks.

Yep, its dry rock from BRS. Its the pukani type. I linked to the BRS page in a previous post. It's cheap and you don't have to pay to ship any water. I'm letting it all dry out right now after I rinsed it out. I did some scrubbing on the rocks to because it did have some dead pieces of spong and other stuff. Not a lot but enough I didn't want it to rot away in the tank. Once I fill it with water I'll throw in a piece of liverock from my other tank for a few weeks and scrape off some coraline to seed it.

I got the reefbright 24" blue/white led light strip and stunner ultraviolet leds in from premiumaquatics today. The retro fit was a heck of a lot easier then I thought it was going to be. It's like the perfecto light unit was made for these led strips.

Unscrewed the base and unhooked all the electronics and end caps came right off. Then screwed the led strips right in place. Fit like a glove. The reefbrights are perfect and I hope not to bright but the G. smithii should be able to handle pretty bright lights.

Like other LED threads the pictures do not do these lights justice. The colors of the sand really pop out and actually gives the white rocks some nice color. The stunners barely do anything with the reefbrights on but does give just a dab of color and will make for a really good moon light.

Here's the light setup. I was able to use the orignal holes for the light switch and power cord for both light strips.

Awesome. I can tell it's gonna look a hell of a lot better than my tanks did. Outstanding job.

i really love the look of that rock on the far right side. Good build so far, the lighting looks awesome

Thanks everyone. I love that big rock too and the lights look better then I expected. Still have a little bit before it's running full time. I'd like to run a new GFI outlet behind the tank so I wont have the cables running down the side. Might be a couple weeks before I get that done as I'm working on a bathroom remodel right now.

Well, got electricity over to the tank. I'm thinking of putting a blue backing on the tank to hide the cables hanging down in the back. I would like to have a nice clean look. With out seeing any cables anywhere. I'll probably get some water in the tank by the end of the weekend.

Thanks. Hope I wont have to much trouble finding one but I don't mind waiting untill I can get what I want. I'll have fun stocking the tank with other items until I find a G. Smithii.

I did get water in the tank tonight. So one more step closer.

Nice tank, hopefully you'll have better luck finding a mantis than me

Don't be discouraged. The longer you wait the more your tank will mature. Good Luck!

Here's the totally uninteresting pic of my tank last night after adding the water.

I'm getting a crocea clam for my main tank and was curious how well it would do in this maintis tank if I placed it right under the lights. It's a pretty shallow tank already.

Here's the clam. Vietnam purple and blue Crocea clam.
Size: 1-3/4"

I'm also getting this cluster of zoa's. I'll put them in my main tank until the mantis tank is ready for them and put them in there.

clams require intense lighting, and mantis shrimp are known to have problems when exposed to intense light for long periods of time, i believe it's called shell rot

From what I understand of the G.smithii is that they are a very shallow water species and can handle brighter light. The LEDs that I got are pretty bright but only on certain areas of the tank as the LEDs don't seem to have a very wide spread at least not how I have mine setup. If I also understand right the crocea clam is the smallest of the tridec. and also doesn't require as much lights as its cousins do. Not that it doesn't still need plenty of light. I would like to try it in the brightest spot of the tank but if you or others still say leave it out after I kind o gave my side of the arguement I'll certainly listen. I won't be one of those people that ask a question an refuse what everyone else says.
