NEW Tunze 9004 Skimmer- Unboxing and Initial Review

Could anyone advise what skimmer can be used now to replace stock skimmer in 130 d ?
As 9002 is not for sale anymore and 9004 i have been told does not fit.

Hi would the 9004 be ok for a 220 litre (58g) with some corals like torch, mushrooms, Xenia, leather, hammer, zoas and maybe 1 or 2 sps and as for fish maybe 2 clowns, 1 yellow tang, 2 green cromis. would this skimmer be ok for this sort of stocking

I would say so, it is rated to 65 gallons of a fish only, what you describe would fall under the mixed reef where it can handle 40 gallons, it is not ideal, the 9012 would be better, but with good management of water chemistry (periodic water changes, phosphate remover, etc) I think for the price point and size you won't find a better suited skimmer.

Marine Depot has a couple online reviews, there have been some threads on here as well, it has only been available for about 9 months and the 9004 has been available for a couple years.

I should add you will find much more on European sites, running a larger in tank skimmer is fairly uncommon in the US.

for a small 15G tank not sure is i should buy 9001 or 9004
since the tank will be in my bed room the most silence one is the better one for me

9001 for sure, it is half the size, the 9004 would take up too much room, their would be no real difference in noise and a 9001 can handle an SPS only tank up to 15 gallons.

I have a 33-34 gallon tank with a moderate to heavy bio load; and I'm looking to keep SPS. 9004 or the newer 9012?

9004 will do the job, the 9012 is a lot bigger physically and a 9004 is rated to 65, you basically are halving what it can do which is about right for SPS, heavy load.

would the 9004 be suitable for use in the sump of a 30 gallon and would i need a conversion kit to put it ther?

Their is no conversion kit, it would need at least 8.86" of water to work, if you can get that water depth it would be fine.

Hey Roger,

So you think the 9004 could handle a light load 30g sps tank?

I know its rated for 66 gallons but there so many more variables than just tank size.

Im currently running a 9004 on a smaller lps tank and its skimming really well.

For a dedicated SPS tank we recommend deducting 60% of the rated capacity so 26.4 gallons would be the ideal. I think it would work and you could use the DC model which would be more than enough, it is rated to 79 or 31.6 of SPS.

The DC model is more powerful than the regular model? I thought it just let you adjust the flow.

It takes in more air, and the air to water ratio stays linear, in the AC model you close the air and get more water. It is stronger, not by much, but enough to make a difference.

Thanks Roger! Good to know! I'm currently planning a new nano tank. I was just going to get the 9004 to save a few bucks. Sounds like now I need to go for the DC model :)
